So I have a 2:1 BSc in Physics from a Russell Group university. Where do I sign up for this magical "any job I want"?

Why is it taking so long between Orion missions? Is the process really that complicated? Also, Orion and future spaceflight general.

Space Railgun

Why don't we use a large railgun to shoot people and cargo into space? I'm serious here. We wont have technology for a space elevator any time soon and strapping people to a large pillar of fuel is both dangerous and expensive, most energy is actually wasted on carrying the fuel. If we want to do space exploration we need cheaper alternatives. I'm not a engineer nor a scientist so I can't do the calculations. You just accelerate the capsule on a large rail. However the G forces would be enormous so if you want to accelerate them at a comfortable rate it would take a very large track. So you could just do it on a circular track and take as many loops as you need and then switch them to the ramp. Pic related, it would be very similar to the LHC. Only you wouldn't use a large vacuum tube and there would be a ramp at the end. And if it's not enough you could always use a hybrid system.

stupid questions thread

How do I get the equation of a rectangular pulse so I can just convolve it with another rectangular pulse? I can do it with the equations given, but the graphical method has me stumped because I do not know which equations to use for x(t) and h(t). I know that you can represent a rectangular pulse like this x(t) = 1 \ \ for \ -1 \ \leq \ t \ \geq \ 1 x(t) = 0 \ otherwise How do I represent it with the Heaviside/unit step function u(t) by just looking at it? y(t) \ = \ x(t) \ * \ h(t) Ask your own stupid questions here.

I'm just speculating but shouldn't universal forces create energy within the universe itself. For instance gravity should be considered a creation of energy. I wanted to start a thread for theories on astrophysics and physics in general.

So topology theory would have me believe i'm an n-holed torus. How many holes exactly? And could someone provide a rune 34 illustration for the sake of science? Thank you

I have a question, i think its more fit here than over at /g/ - say that our general purpose GSM/3G/4G/what have you mobile phone poles emitted light in a visible spectrum, how bright would it be? I mean it travels through walls and trees and all of that, unless that has more to do with the wavelength

All this talk of science and yet nobody talking about Molten Salt Nuclear Reactors? Virtually limitless carbon free energy with waste products beneficial in both medical and scientific applications. Not to mention we could start a moon base more easily if we didn't have to rely on the sun/batteries. Why aren't you talking about Thorium? #energyfromthorium energyfromthorium.com

Is it possible to lift your legs off the ground while standing up? Theoretically, if your arms were strong enough, you would be able to do this, right? Yet it doesn't seem to be possible.

Could there be a time when humans inhabit Mars? Like people are just born there, have cities there, etc. and nobody even bats an eye. We just happen to live on 2 planets, etc.

What is the science behind the shape of the human penis? Why is it shaped like that? Did we evolve to have this because this is the best shape for human copulation habits? How so?
