Minkowski Space Time

/sci/, I have a question for you. All of you know the metric (or line element, doesn't matter) of Minkowski space \mathrm{d} s^2 = - \mathrm{d} t^2 + \mathrm{d} \mathbf{x}^2\,, now my question is, where does the sign of \mathrm{d} t^2 exactly come from? I get that it's just how the stabiliser of the Lorentz group is defined, but I don't really see where it originates from, I mean physically. Can someone help? Picture unrelated

How is it possible to get a PhD when you do research in shit things?

This is considered PhD level research at Georgia Tech. So, the author of the paper will get a PhD from Georgia Tech and if you actually see what she does, you'll see it is in shit areas. Meanwhile STEMfags at Georgia Tech will barely get a PhD in Math/CS/Physics etc.

Why do they say that sin(x)/x = 1? It's wrong, here's my proof: Sin(pi/4)/pi4 = sqrt(2)/2 / pi/4 =(4*sqrt(2))/2p = 8.88577

Sorry for this repost but My question is in regards to RADIATION strictly, regarding it's speed and other turbulent factors. lets say that I am in three places of equidistance during the detonation of an atomic payload Let's say 10 miles 'from'. A - standing clearview of the bomb B - standing behind a wall, moving away from both that wall and the explosion C - standing inside of a room D - standing between two walls E - standing inside of a room with many rooms in-front/adjacent the room and walls Are WOODEN. (this has nothing to do with modern politics, science only please) Radiation confuses the fuck out of me

>Taking Thermo/E&M physics class >Thermodynamics exam next Friday >mfw Any advice on what to know for a "comprehensive" thermo exam? It covers the general thermo stuff that you would learn in an undergrad physics course. Kind of nervous right now. I have been watching videos and going over my notes as well as material from physics websites. I am somewhat ok with the material but would like to hear from you guys who have had experience with thermodynamics. My professor only goes over the math without ever explaining the conceptual knowledge that goes with it. Sucks because I have to link all of the math notes from class to the concepts on my own. Well I normally do that in all of my classes anyways but much more so with this class. Thanks in advance.

What's the point of manned space flight? Is there any point other than nation dickwaving? What's the point of putting men on mars when you can send robots? Sending men is more dangerous, costly, time consuming etc.

What do you make of this /sci/? http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/04/11/lab-grown-vaginas-successfully-implanted-in-girls-in-tissue-engineering-first/ Whats the hold up on stuff like this? Why aren't we growing organs for people will missing limbs or genitals for transpeople, etc, etc I feel like "ethics" are holding back the scientific progress related to growing limbs and such, stem cells, ips cells, etc etc I guess private funding is really what causes science to develop, but why aren't any private parties or organizations dumping money into this sort of thing?

/sci/ what do you believe comes after death? Are you scared of dying and/or the possibility of an afterlife? How does it feel to know everything you are will be one day switched off to possibly be never switched back on? Or the possibility you'll burn forever ans suffer for your sins or be rewarded?
