Why do great mathematicians inevitably give up mathematics to pursue more worldly things? I'm thinking of Grothendieck, Galois, Cantor, Perelman, Kaczynski, etc Is math inherently unsatisfying or is it just academic institutions?

How do you save a patient with radiation poisoning?

mathsfag here, started learning guitar so i'd have a hobby, now I can play shit but don't know any theory like I don't want a reference book but something you'd go through and take notes on

How to learn Integrals and Derivatives fast /sci/? I used to be good at math until 8th grade, from there I just started being dumb and not give a shit. I have a great job now and I want to get my CS title but damn, math is giving me a hard time and I deserve it for being a moron, how can I catch up fast so I can do Derivatives and Integrals easily?

Before the Big Bang when there was just a single singularity, before there was space and time, what was the state of energy inside the singularity? at a state of equilibrium? or in a state of imbalance trying to reach equilibrium?

How do we fix American education?

One car is driving at 50 MPH towards another car, which is driving in the opposite direction also at 50 MPH. These two cars will pass at 100 MPH relative to each other. Imagine we were on a space ship moving at 51% the speed of light towards another ship moving in the opposite direction also at 51% the speed of light, then at what speed will we pass relative to each other? Hey /sci/-- What is the motivation behind regularizing $\sum /mathbb{N}$ to be equal to -1/12? As a math major it seems silly to me, and the numberphile video that "proves" it using basic properties of series does some bad math. So what is its use in quantum mechanics? pic related.

Hi. I'm looking for a good book to supplement my studies for the next semester. That's a really important class that I have to take and I would like to prepare as best as possible and would love to learn a lot before class is starting. I looked in the syllabus and the script for this one module and therefore I need at best something which will cover... (An image with the topics will be in the next post.) --- Number theory: Euclidean algorithm, RSA-Algorithm, Modulo, Chinese remainder theorem, Primality test. Algebra: Groups (Permutation group/s), Complex numbers (Complex plane), Polynoms (interpolation), Fields. Linear Algebra: Analytic geometry, Euclidean space, Linear map(ping) and matrices, System of linear equations, Gaussian algorithm, calculations of inverses of matrices, Determinants, Other groups, Homogeneous coordinates. Analysis: Sequences and series. Probability space.
