Interview with everyone in the pharma's r&d.....turns out I'm "not a good fit." Have tons of experience and its a highly skilled/technical chemistry position.... I worked my ass off for my PhD and put up with my PI's shit for years. I even helped to push his goddamn career and boosted his H factor like crazy. A whole day of interviews, no negative feedback at all, no indications that I wasn't good enough. What the fuck? The ceo at my last pharma dumped R&D for a bunch of outsourced CMOs and it seems like everything is moving to fucking china and india....Should I just change industries?

How does /sci/ cope with existential depression? Is there a reason to live, if immortality is beyond our reach?

>A very peculiar thing about the fundamental constants is that they appear to have exactly the right values. If they were slightly smaller or bigger, atoms, stars, planets and people simply wouldn’t exist! >Take the strong force inside atomic nuclei. If the force were just slightly stronger, it would boost up the burning of stars so much, that they would explode only seconds after they were formed. We wouldn’t have a sun – or even a planet. If on the other hand the force were a tad weaker, it would be too weak to hold together elements like the heavy hydrogen isotope deuterium. Stars wouldn’t light up. And we wouldn’t be here either. >Astonishingly, the same goes for all other constants. As the famous British astronomer Martin Rees put it: “Wherever we look, we see examples of fine-tuning. Most of the physical constants and the initial conditions of the Universe examined so far appear to be fine-tuned to some extent.”

Do the properties of quantum particles change when beings -other- than humans observe them? What determines what is observation and what isn't?

Hey all. I'm a student at UW. I'm really curious about random questions about drugs on campus and so I was thinking it'd be cool if we all just talked about it. how much do you guys pay for pot? besides alcohol, weed, and adderall, what would you guess is the next most common drug used on campus? do you guys support legalization? Of all drugs? Just pot? do you buy your drugs off of dark net markets or from local sources? do you think that students are generally well educated about drugs? why or why not? what can be improved about university policies pertaining to drugs? Edit: also, please add any questions you have!

Axiom of Choice

Emma-Stone-fag why is Axiom of Choice valid in constructive mathematics including HoTT? Why do we reject a know-it-all oracle that is the classical full Axiom of Choice and accept a countable oracle that merely spits out black box computable functions which nothing can be said about? Why can we literally treat Brouwer–Heyting–Kolmogorov interpretation and assume that if \displaystyle \forall n \in \mathbb{N} .\exists x \in X. \varphi [n, x] then there has to be a function f:\mathbb{N} \longrightarrow X such that merely \varphi [n, f(n)] and there is no fucking way to predict behavior of this magical function besides that \varphi [n, f(n)] holds? I completely don't get the point. If the idea of constructive mathematics is provide explicit constructions in the proofs then what is the fucking reason to believe in some freaking black boxes with unknown properties?

How can modern organic chemists survive without access to Scifinder (or Reaxys) and chemdraw (or other cambridgesoft suites)? How can chemists that are searching for jobs even hope to compete if they have no way to access the modern tools of the trade? This upsets me a lot.

How do you study? Post how you put yourself in the mood, stay concentrated and focused and what methods you use to soak up a lot of knowledge in little time - whether it's reading books and summarizing them with the most important notes or studying formulas and how to derive them from other formulas. This is not meant to be a "life hack" thread or something, just something for me and others to compare their habits and ways of studying and maybe see how we could improve our individual style. Here's my usual way: >get in time trouble >get nervous >get a script from a lecture >start from the beginning >write down all things i consider important >start revising info >find i need to go back further and read up on fundamental things again just to fully understand derivations and such >have to look up all kinds of things because i think i need to fully understand reasonings and algorithms >lose a lot of time on things that might not be as important >panic

Is it possible to get all of the knowledge of a college education without actually going to college? I don't care about any slips of paper that'll get me hired somewhere or something, I just want the information that an education would give me. Is there any where I could download or purchase the course materials that professors use, like tests and textbook reading schedules and such?

Isn't gyroscope anti-gravity technically real? Before you laugh hear me out: Gravity is a linear force towards the centre of mass, can't defy that without some sort of linear reaction propulsion that's not in dispute. However the torque due to gravity on an object held on an axle can be cancelled out with gyroscopic action. If we are analyzing a system rotating on a fixed axle all that matters is torque therefore if we define the gravitational effect on the system as the torque caused by gravity we can say that the gyroscopic action cancels out the gravitational effect. tl;dr gyroscopic action doesn't cancel out gravity itself but it does cancel out gravitational torque on a rotating system therefore it is technically an "anti-gravity" device.

I paid for a mensa IQ test and got a score of 144. How is this even possible? I'm a 23 year old tranny college dropout who is stupid as fuck. I mean, I paid for a IQ test, that should be proof enough. Does this score actually say something about my intelligence or does it just mean I'm good at taking an IQ test?
