ITT: things you learned from reading the philosophy of science I learned that science uses experiments and observations. Thanks, philosophy. Without you I would of never know this.

Hey /sci/ My bird sized brain cant wrap around the creation of the universe. As far as I understand the prominent theory would be string theory, and a collision of strings generated the big bang. Fine, but where did the strings come from? Heisenbergs uncertainty principle states that systems can be created out of nothing by spontaniously forming pairs of particle . The closer the sum of energy of these particles, the longer the system can survive. But how would this with the big bang? Also, in what dimension would that have happened? Please help

Just finished reading The Walking Whales: From Land to Water in Eight Million Years. It's a reasonably easy read and a comprehensive guide to what we know about the evolution of the whale. Do you guys know of any other books that provide a readable outline of the evolution of a clade?

How close are we in genetic terms? I've heard 95% from some and 99% from others. I think it's about 97%, but I'm just a layman.

>mfw 95% of the idiots talking about this shit have no clue that mars has 1/3 earth gravity how the fuck does he plan to deal with this for his "colonists"

This topic is probably talked to death on here, but I never get a clear answer where I look. How long would humanity survive on Earth in the hypothetical scenario of the Sun disappearing without a trace? A week? A few months? A decade? What kind of technology could sustain us longer?

There exists a concrete polynomial [math] P \in \mathbb{Z}[x_1,\ldots,x_9] [/math] (aka a polynomial of 9 variables with integer coefficients) such that the statement "There exist integers [math] m_1, \ldots, m_9 [/math] such that [math] P(m_1,\ldots,m_9) = 0 [/math]" is formally undecidable, i.e. neither provable nor disprovable in ZFC. Furthermore, given any extension of ZFC, there will exist a polynomial with the same property with respect to it. How does this make you feel? That something so concrete can be undecidable?
