Earth flat

I saw some b8 on /b/ about the earth being flat, is there any actual proof the earth is flat and if so please share it

What did he mean by this?

Films about science and technology are usually pessimistic. Why?

78 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
Why are science fiction films so pessimistic these days? Every film seems to revolve around us all (nearly) getting killed by robots or aliens or the 'elite' amongst ourselves who have access to some kind of powerful technology denied (for unknown reasons) to everyone else; getting marooned on some alien world and trying desperately to get back home, or trying to save the world from some catastrophe caused by our own arrogance or ignorance. Where are the optimistic visions of the future? Where are the films about mankind setting out into the stars and achieving great triumphs, rather than constantly struggling against all odds just to stay alive? Where are the films about the creation of incredible new technologies which *don't* nearly get us all killed; that instead radically improve our lives? Where are the films about the radically better, brighter future that we used to believe in?

can a binary star setup like this actually be stable (as in they won't collide eventually)?

What are some interesting open questions in mathematics?

So /sci/, prove that 0 factorial = 1

Change in enthalpy units

2 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
Whilst investigating the change in enthalpy of various fuels, is it better to make comparison in the units: kJ/g or kJ/mol. Or is it irrelevant what I choose so long as I am consistent?

I want to learn economic theory from a mathematical perspective. I am reading "the wealth of nations" to get a basic understanding of modern economics, but I want to learn how to apply math to economics. Any books out there teach economics mainly from math? I am a math and physics double major so I probably already know all the math. I just want to learn how to apply it.

Could we cure low intelligence? It seems to be the cause of a lot of our societal and economic problems; so shouldn't it be one of our primary scientific goals?

Grad student general:

Let's have a (prospective) graduate student thread. Discuss all things related to graduate school: practical questions (applying, getting funded, studying abroad) as well as research questions

How does photon upconversion work? The only one I can find an explanation for is two-photon excitation.

What does /sci/ think of Ramanujan? Pic related, watched his movie recently and thought he was bloody brilliant of a mathematician.

What is it about math that makes regular people shut their brains off? You give them anything above arithmetic and they just refuse to even try.

What's the worst case, but still realistic, scenario for the LHC? People always seem to be hand wringing over it, but from what I've read CERN has everything under control.

Weekend fun puzzle / experiment:

This is the perfect kind of problem to troll people. Its statement can be understood by high school students or anyone who has learned about functions (that's in Math 001). It should be easy. But is it? Here is where the experts will start to shake their heads knowingly, but I'm conducting an experiment to see if people, including & especially math majors, can solve it without already knowing the main lemma used in the proof. Maybe they can give a new solution too? Try your best, /sci/.

Is it worth majoring in Chemistry, sci? In terms of jobs prospects and content.
