Where does life begin? Does the "soul" just cling to something, like a spontaneous chemical reaction, and then grow? Where the fuck does it come from? I am aware of human delusion and human arrogance, but those two things don't explain away the feeling of being alive, and the apparent lack of a good explanation for it. People have claimed that we are basically a computer, but if we were to upload our brain onto a hard drive, I can guarantee that we wouldn't be sentient as a computer program, no matter how much our digital selves try to deny it. I am well aware of neurons having an on and an off function, and the fact that our brains operate like a computer, but there must be something more to it, that we are not yet able to measure. Part of us must exist outside the physical world, maybe even just one simple spark of life. TL;DR: They call them fingers, but I never see them fing.

Space travel simply isn't viable. We don't see signs of alien life because no one makes it. Even if the universe has tricks to make it possible, it takes a very loooooong time to even master the technology which is long past the time of any life in the universe.

How many of you autists ARE NOT positivists? And why not? I bet some of you have been espousing positivism without actually being aware of it as a philosophical position or of the many arguments against it. >Positivism is a philosophical theory stating that positive knowledge is based on natural phenomena and their properties and relations. Thus, information derived from sensory experience, interpreted through reason and logic, forms the exclusive source of all authoritative knowledge.[1] Positivism holds that valid knowledge (certitude or truth) is found only in this derived knowledge.[2] >Verified data (positive facts) received from the senses are known as empirical evidence; thus positivism is based on empiricism.[1]

ChemE work

ChemE coursework seems interesting, but I honestly don't know what kind of work these people do. I imagine most of it is like pic related, where you go around and press buttons on some interface to control pipes and shit. Seems boring, but is there anything else to it? What kind of stuff do ChemE graduates do in the workplace?

now before you hurl insults at me, i am a bible literalist, creationist, christian, etc etc. i'm starting to think the outer space is not what we think it is. i think earth might actually be flat, or not a globe. can anyone 100% disprove to me that the earth is a globe?

What are some /sci/ hobbies?

Does /sci/ do drugs? Every once in a while I see people on here saying they take some medicine that makes them do maths for n hours straight. As I've never done anything harder than coffee I wonder to what extent it helps and to what extent it fucks up your life? With coffee I found it barely has any effect on me anymore but it's still worse without it. Is it the same with drugs, just more extreme? Also if you've taken illigal drugs share how much it fucked up your life and ruined your academic career. Pic kinda related. Music's one helluva drug.
