Hi. I'm an Actuary. I legitimately think I'm smarter than most people in Finance and in Mathematics. (I also did a Pure Maths major) What do you lesser beings do?

Why are there so few women in physics and maths? Theoretically they should be able to add to these fields just as much as men. We have very very few important female scientists and mathematicians throughout history. Oppression surely adds to that but in the last few decades that should have changed. Whats stopping women? "Oppression" and it being a male dominated field aren't really good reasons. Those reasons will stop people who dont belong in those fields anyway

Were the Incompleteness Theorems anticipated?

11 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
every great theory has always been anticipated by other people Newton's achievement in Universal Gravitation was remarkable, but it was anticipated by many of his contemporaries Einstein's General Relativity another genius accomplishment but again it was anticipated by his contemporaries as well Godel's Incompleteness Theorems seem like they literally came out of no where, you had Hilbert building his project, and then Godel comes and everyone's like "What the fuck is this.....this is genius" so is the Incompletenss theorems the one groundbreaking idea that was not anticipated by anyone else besides Godel

Two Genetically Engineered Babies on their way.

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2108549-exclusive-3-parent-baby-method-already-used-for-infertility/ New Scientist has learned that two women in Ukraine are both more than 20 weeks pregnant with fetuses created using such a technique. The babies would be the first born to women who had the procedure to treat infertility, rather than to prevent hereditary disease, but some have criticised this approach, calling for it to be banned until there is more evidence that the embryos it creates are healthy. The technique used is the same as that approved last year by the UK parliament – the only country in the world to legalise the procedure – although there it is allowed only to prevent parents passing hereditary diseases to their children.

Science of charm

What is psychology/sociology/neuroscience? behind Bernie Sanders' charm? He is 150 years old, but he is absolutely adored by youth and in fact has 99.9975% of their votes (numbers may be slightly incorrect, but basically are true). He is very liked and causes you to experience the subjective feelings of respect, happieness, admiration, trust and even love towards him. Obviously, there's the fact that he's genuine - in a sense that he uses his personality and molds it as opposed to creating an artificial persona like Hillary does. He creates a perception of your every guy - every old man, in fact; the underdog. That much is clear. But it's far from enough to explain his unique and very powerful charm. What is the mechanism at work here?

What's the evolutionary advantage of pedophilia? What causes the urge to breed with girls too young to actually give birth?

Alkali metal engines

Serious question Why don't we make car engines that run on alkali metals and water? Sodium and potassium are so fucking common, and afaik there wouldn't be any pollution (byproducts perhaps could become fuel for other engines?). Just mix vaporized alkali metals with a couple of drops of water and the compression stroke will keep the engine running as long as there is fuel. Has this been done?

Hawking Radiation

I've been trying to understand what Hawking Radiation is, but every single explanation I have found either is an analogy that seems to just explain a different analogy or a jumble of math. I get that this isn't something that can be explained in layman's terms, but can someone give me a rough idea of it that makes sense without taking years of physics classes?

I have been learning about computers, programming and Linux over the past couple months and have a sort of general question about a phrase that keeps coming up. A lot of guides, tutorials and articles I have looked at mention 'being comfortable in a CLI environment'...my question is how would we define 'comfortable'? I am not sure if there is a clear answer to this...or if it is just a subjective or context related thing, but I figured I'd attempt to throw it out for discussion...
