Techniques for mental Speed/Distance/Time calculations

11 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: speed.jpg]
Hi /sci/, This is embarassing but as a compsci post grad I have been recently stumped at doing a verbal Speed Distance Time calculation test for the US Army. I was wondering if there is any techniques for figuring out the answer easily and effectively. For example: What speed covers 11 miles in 3 hours and 40 mins? How would you break this problem down in your head. Many thanks!

can some one explain why Li2O into water does not make an acid eg Li2O + H20 --> 2LIOH + 2H + O2 In no it is supposed to be basic but does that mean that the oh Drops right of the LI agian??? also why does he O not rip H's of H20 to give more OH and then combine with the 2H made by LI riping of the OH from H20 and thus being ultimately neutral as the H2 and 2OH combine back to water????

So /sci/, how do I into maths? I've always liked maths and physics, but there's one little detail. I suck at them. I just don't know why, but I don't really seem to have the capacity to figure out in my own how to solve stuff that involves multiple mathematical concepts and properties, instead of just one equation. This is especially bad considering that I want to study chemical engineering, and obviously there's lots of maths and physics involved. If I don't know how to correctly use maths, I don't think I can even get past the admission test.

basic java question

So, I have this basic java variable assignment question. So far I have num msg1 msg2 1024 1024 x = 0 1024 x = 0 1024 = 1024 512 x = 0 1024 = 512 512 1024 = 512 1024 = 512 I was wondering about the division step. Thanks for any input

I was hoping you guys might be able to help me a bit with a half life problem. SO2Cl2 has a half life of 4.88x10^3 s, if the initial concentration of SC2Cl2 is 1 M, how long does it take for the concentration to decrease to 0.78 M? I reasoned that the decrease in concentration is 22% of the initial, so I just multiplied .22 by the half life and I came up with 1.07x10^3 s, however the text says it is 1.7x10^3 seconds. Could anyone help me understand what I'm doing wrong?

Why isn't wood transparent? I understand why metals are opaque, but what are the transitions in wood (or other polymers) that cause strong absorption in visible spectrum? At first I thought that the individual strands could have metallic electron sharing (like polyacetylene) and that the mechanism of opaqueness is essentially that of metals. The reason why wood is shiny being simply due to disordering of the strands. But, I don't know, the more I think about it, the more stupid it sounds. Are there simply bound electronic states in those polymers whose energy differences match that of visible light? Why are states with visible-spectrum energy differences so prevalent in natural tissues? Why not UV or xrays? (at first I wanted to say biopolymers, but I don't know shit about biology so I'm not sure if most of biopolymers are actually opaque). Did our eyes simply evolve so that only the spectrum where most of the nature is opaque is visible? Help me out guys, it's been bugging me for half a day now. Pic related, you can't see through a bear.

I was reading up on resistant bacteria and virus species, and how overuse/misuse of antibiotics creates resistant species. My question is, how come this doesn't apply to other things that can kill bacteria? Couldn't they evolve to become resistant to, let's say, bleach or high amounts of radiation? Or resistant to high temperatures?

I have a spare 0.3 mg EpiPen that I want to use as adrenochrome. What would be a safe dose and the best way to administer it? The EpiPen is an auto-injector needle and I want to control the dose.

Putnam Problem of the Day

Problems at: http://math.harvard.edu/putnam/ To find threads: >>>/sci/putnam Let f_1, \dots, f_{10} be bijections of the integers such that for every integer n, there exists a sequence i_1, \dots, i_k for some k such that f_{i_1} \circ \dots \circ f_{i_k}(0) = n. Prove that if A is any nonempty finite set, there exist at most 512 sequences (e_1, \dots, e_{10}) of zeroes and ones such that f_1^{e_1} \circ \dots \circ f_{10}^{e_{10}} maps A to A. (Here f^1 = f and f^0 means the identity function.)
