Hey /sci/, /k/ here. I would just like to say, good evening and I hope you're enjoying yourselves. Now, what I came here for is a manner of grave importance. There are anons on /k/ right now that are arguing that a Russian missile shot down the meteor above eastern Russia. Please help us stamp out their ignorance, thank you >>>/k/14835062

Need to choose two between the following electives: >Graph Theory >Cryptography >Numerical Analysis I They're part of the 'math' credits I can choose from for my Junior year as CS major. In general, which are easier (I know it depends on school/professor blahhblahblahh). I don't care about how interesting or "helpful" they are. I just want an easy A for fucks sake.

The Virgin Science

So theoretically the Laws of Physics might be different in other universes. If Math is the purest science, would the same hold true for it? Or is math the only objective, absolute truth in any world?

/SCI! I have a scientific and fun adventure for you!! My school has a competition between the different science majors. We have to complete the task given using our discipline (ie chem people use chemicals). This year's task: Build a machine that will nail a material of your choosing, two feet high, so that a 20 lb weight can be held on it. So my group are ChemE's. I had an idea: instead of hammering in the nail, why can't we hold it in place somehow and then freeze the material around it with a chemical reaction!! My question: what materials are close to melting at around room temperature, is cheap, and isn't toxic. Also any ideas on a reaction that will freeze the material would be much appreciated. The only one I have in my mind right now using an endothermic reaction to carry heat away Thank you in advance

Techniques for mental Speed/Distance/Time calculations

11 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: speed.jpg]
Hi /sci/, This is embarassing but as a compsci post grad I have been recently stumped at doing a verbal Speed Distance Time calculation test for the US Army. I was wondering if there is any techniques for figuring out the answer easily and effectively. For example: What speed covers 11 miles in 3 hours and 40 mins? How would you break this problem down in your head. Many thanks!

Serious question for somebody who is an idiot at math. How does e work? I mean, if you think about the harmonic series (1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + 1/5 etc) it goes to infinity. But e (1+ 1/1 + 1/2! + 1/3! + 1/4! + 1/5!) doesn't. Why is that?

Hey /sci/, English literature major here. I've been keeping a strict autodidactic routine. I never paid attention in class until my university days- not even in the most basic things. And so I've taught myself fledgling mathematics: arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. With those under my belt, I want to begin in the sciences. Should I start with physics, continue to chemistry, and finally go for biology? A different order? A bit of each at the same time so I can make the connections along the way? What do you think? TL;DR: what order should a self-taught student approach the sciences: physics, chemistry, biology? Why?

uHaul Dimensional Math

7 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: 38999S.jpg]
So I can't math. And I know this is basic... I am trying to calculate how much Volume in feet I need based on measurements in inches. This is all going to be applied to my household items going into uHaul, uBoxes that measure 8' deep, 7' Tall, and 5' Wide. I get two different numbers when doing the volume on the uhaul box. Feet, converting to inches: 5 * 8 * 7 == 280 * 12 == 3,360 Inches, converting to Feet, 90 * 96 * 84 == 725,760 / 12 == 60,480 My expectation when doing the division is to have the number of inches, match the total number of Feet. 280 is != 60,480. By what means would I reduce a measure of total volume in Cubic Feet into inches, and how would I take total volume in inches to Feet? Pic Related...

Asteroid and metric stupidity

I'm not sure of the actual size, weight, and speed but I've been noticing how when they describe the asteroid that was close to earth they say. "It was approximately 15 meters wide, weighed about 100 tons and was 35,000 feet from earth." Why use the metric system for one thing and not the others?

Rational Functions: The Movie. The Hero, Numerator, is fighting against the Villain, Denominator. There will come a point that the Villain will try to reach, and he can get as close to it as he wants, but he'll never truly reach it. The Hero, once he rids himself of Denominator, can reach it with ease. And from there, the function lived happily ever defined. The end.

THREAD DERAIL: If a cell phone is (temporarily) confiscated by LEO during an investigation, do LEO have the authority and capability/technology to crack/bypass/override cellular phone "passwords" on the phone's lock screen? I distinctly remember an article a while back titled somewhere along the lines of "Authorities Frustrated with Inability to Crack Cell Passwords", and went on to highlight a few local cases. I would imagine even a programmed brute force attack on a phone's passcode would be theoretically easy enough with a simple 4 number pin to unlock....but with the advent of the popular "draw" passcode on most all Android devices [pic related], that has to be very difficult/currently impossible to crack......yeah..?
