Hey /sci/. I tried to ask in /b/, but I didn't have a good answer. Hope you can help me. What is a "Gadolinium Gallium Garnet Quantum Electronic Processor"?

Hey guys, I need some chem help Find the atoms whose ions have an electron configuration of nd^5 (n = 3, 4 ,5...)? Check all that apply Rn Tc N Sr Fe Re I think Sr and Rn don't work but I'm not 100%. If someone could walk through the process I would really appreciate it.

Here's an argument for the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics (MWI). If you get into Schrodinger's box and repeatedly survive a 50/50 chance of dying, you will eventually have proved (to YOURSELF, not to anyone else) that MWI is correct. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_suicide_and_immortality.) The next step is to see the entire universe as one giant box, and you're Schrodinger's Cat. You have already survived an astronomical number of "quantum murder attempts" -- from the moment of the Big Bang, it was vastly more likely that you would never exist than that you would exist. So simply by existing at all, you have already undergone the equivalent of an enormous number of 50/50 "quantum suicide" attempts, and have thus proved (to YOURSELF) that MWI is almost certainly true. Not only that, but everyone else can also prove MWI (to THEMSELVES) by contemplating their own existence. Thoughts?

Can anyone explain the phase transition of water? (I'm looking for an explanation in terms of the chemistry of the atom and molecules with reference to the forces found in water/ice)

She's on the tour of Willy Wonkas chocolate factory and is a compulsive gum chewer. Blueberry flavored gum comes out of the experimental machine and she stupidly pops it into her mouth without listening to warnings. What happens to her?

Is dark matter and dark energy just a convenient excuse that scientists use because what they observe doesn't fit with what they predicted?

So the Higgs thing is probably old news by now and I'm guessing most people here are familiar with it. Why ddin't they declare the particle discovered ath the LHC the Higgs right away? Was there an important physical property that has not been determined at the time?

Any Physics majors in here? I'll start uni next year and I'd like to hear experiences and stuff from people who are already in it. What should I know before getting into it?

Hey, anyone around here actually familiar with doing science? Namely plotting with Gnuplot? I want to know how can i set up the gnuplot console font size (Windows) anytime i change it. It resets when i close the session.

/sci/, why do we age? why does it seem that life itself doesn't? Why is it possible to produce sperm that will grow into a whole brand new being but when rest of the cells will just die?

What the hell is a wave function? I understand the basics of functional analysis and C* algebras, operators on Hilbert spaces, the correspondence between classical statistical mechanics (probability measures as the extreme points of the dual space to C(X), where X is supposed to be the R^n space representing position and momentum), but what are the wave functions? Are they actual L^2 functions? Are we talking about L^2(R^3) or something like that, so that the wave functions are literally functions that can be evaluated?
