Double slit experiment

Hello /sci, I normally reside on /mu or /b, but here goes.
I'm trying to cut through the bs surrounding the double slit experiment and quantum entanglement.
As we know, when a detector is placed by the slits, the interference pattern does not form on the wall.
Does the detector itself cause this or is it the act of consciousness observing/limiting the slits?
Or is it just some idiosyncratic effect having the to with how the light is observed?
I understand that light demonstrates properties of particles and waves, but I may not be fully understanding the implications.

Humanity is going to the stars. one way or another, it will happen. but before we sow our seeds of life in the great star field of our universe, we have to spread to the planets. in our own solar system. you know, baby steps, right? as for the first planet we colonize, my money, along with many others, is on Mars. there are many ideas as far as how to colonize it, many of them are theoretically possible. but no matter how we make Mars habitable, it wont make a difference. Mars will simply die again within a few hundred thousand years. The problem is, Mars is dead right now for a reason. i believe it was dated by geological evidence that Mars's magnetic field shut down about 4 billion years ago. the reason: the convection columns in the planets cooled, then collapsed. the magnetic field vanished, and over a short period by geological time, much of the atmosphere was blasted away one molecule at a time by the solar winds. so, knowing this, we would be beyond stupid to attempt to terraform mars before finding a way to prevent its atmosphere from being blasted away again. We are going to figure out how to prevent this, or at least start to figure it out, or, failing that, we are going to attempt to figure it out. i have a few vague ideas that probably wont work, but i dont want to predispose you to any of my ideas, thereby limiting your potential creativity in the matter.
