http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34_C1P8STto Is this at all realistic? Could you seriously be stabbed that many times and retain consciousness/enough muscle control to pin someone against a wall?

/sci/, is there any book you would recommend for someone who's trying to better himself. I, since about 15, didn't do anything intellectually, destroyed myself with shit food/drinks, caffeine, being fat, everything wrong. I am now 22, I finally got the control back of my life, and I wish to read some "good" literature. I want something that will open my wisdom, make me think otherwise, make me more literate about everyday things so I can make better decision. Something along the lines of psychology or philosophy. I'm not an idiot however, but I just NEVER finished a book but one I just finished. I am starting my journey.

When will we be able to harness the power of quanta? Will this ever be possible? Are there any theories on how we'd go about doing it. Is there a massive amount of energy to be gained by single quantum interactions?

Genetics Question (Genomic Imprinting)

Q: Genes that cause Prader-Willi syndrome and Angelman syndrome are closely linked along chromosome 15. Although people with these syndromes do not usually reproduce, let's suppose that a couple produces two children with Angelman syndrome. The oldest child (named Pat) grows up and has two children with Prader-Willi syndrome. The second child (named Robin) grows up and has one child with Angelman syndrome. 1) Are Pat and Robin's parents both normal or does one of them have Angelman syndrome or Prader-Willi syndrome? If one of them has a disorder, explain why it is the mother or the father. 2) What are the sexes of Pat and Robin? Explain. --------------------------- Here's the relevant wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelman_Syndrome And here's what I'm thinking. 2) seems more straightforward. Pat must be male because PWS results from a paternal deletion on chromosome 15 and silencing on the maternal copy. Robin would have to be female because the situation is basically the same as PWS but reversed for AS. 1) This one is giving me trouble. My thought is that the father is normal because AS results from a maternal chrom 15 deletion. The mother seems more complicated. If she's passing on a mutation then either she simply has AS herself...or could she have the maternal chrom 15 deletion BUT still not have AS somehow?

Why is some science being censored or discouraged because of morals and politics? I'm thinking specifically researching possible differences between human races and genders. It's sort of like expecting nature to be more politically correct, isn't it?

Why don't we have a Dyson-Harrop satellite yet? It's entirely physically plausible, and the only thing really holding it back seems to be the dispersion of power-transmission lasers over long distances. If we just implemented a "relay" system so that individual lasers never had to travel too far, then I don't see why it wouldn't work. For (probably) less than 20 billion dollars, we could have more power than the human race could ever use in the conceivably near future.

“Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't.” ~ Mark Twain What are some facts about the universe that are stranger than anything from fiction? Since nothing paranormal or supernatural exists, then I'm sure has to be plenty of realistic bizarre things in our universe!

What does he do to benefit scientific pursuit/interest? I'm not antagonizing, I just would like to know how he is influencing anything of a scientific nature.

Are plants still scientifically interesting? Does studying them have any big theoretical implications about how we understand life and the world, or does botany just focus on making more efficient crops for Monsanto?

Would anyone have a screenshot of the completed maths exercises on the Khan Academy. I have done most of it myself but I don't think I will complete it all before I have to hand in some paperwork. The skill progression screen would be perfect. If someone could get me one it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey /sci/, I really didn't know where else I could ask this, so I need help with a work I got about jet engines. I need to know the differences between annular type and can type combustors/combustion chambers and I need to know at least one advantage or disadvantage of annular type combustor.

If we already have a helium shortage, how does google expect to maintain a fleet of tens of thousands of internet balloons? Hypothetically solar power and electrolysis could make clean hydrogen to lift balloons. And what happens when internet broadcasting equipment starts falling from the sky? Those balloons don't fly forever.
