Genetics Question (Genomic Imprinting)

2 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: palmereldritch.jpg]
Q: Genes that cause Prader-Willi syndrome and Angelman syndrome are closely linked along chromosome 15. Although people with these syndromes do not usually reproduce, let's suppose that a couple produces two children with Angelman syndrome. The oldest child (named Pat) grows up and has two children with Prader-Willi syndrome. The second child (named Robin) grows up and has one child with Angelman syndrome. 1) Are Pat and Robin's parents both normal or does one of them have Angelman syndrome or Prader-Willi syndrome? If one of them has a disorder, explain why it is the mother or the father. 2) What are the sexes of Pat and Robin? Explain. --------------------------- Here's the relevant wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelman_Syndrome And here's what I'm thinking. 2) seems more straightforward. Pat must be male because PWS results from a paternal deletion on chromosome 15 and silencing on the maternal copy. Robin would have to be female because the situation is basically the same as PWS but reversed for AS. 1) This one is giving me trouble. My thought is that the father is normal because AS results from a maternal chrom 15 deletion. The mother seems more complicated. If she's passing on a mutation then either she simply has AS herself...or could she have the maternal chrom 15 deletion BUT still not have AS somehow?

Alkalinity of Meth and Effectiveness of Shooting vs Smoking

Okay. /sci/ related. Need to know about the PH in related to method of use and how it effects the high. Does how it's made effect whether shooting or smoking or snorting would be the most intense high? HYPOTHETICALLY LETS SAY..... I had some old batch of shard I picked up 2 weeks ago. It was pretty damn good. Small shards/rocks and some crushed stuff. I know, it is crushed rock as me and the guy I get it from are tight and work together sometimes. The crushed/shake stuff at the bottom of the bag is when he breaks apart the 7-28 gram rocks. Not sugar/salt.The new batch I got from him. Is much bigger shards/rocks/ MUCH bigger. 0.1 -1g rocks mostly. See photo. This is it. New stuff smokes great. Smooth, stays clear longer, and gets me much higher. Old stuff, is good but not as good. Top grade shit but not rocket fuel. Couple who both IV together tried some of the old stuff, a half g of it and it lasted them a couple days. They were on a 4-5 day run or something and said it gave them an insane rush every time. Then the new stuff they said it wasn't as intense rush wise and more subtle. got a quarter g. They want to buy more of the old stuff, not asking for free new. So, they're not doing the junkie "not as strong this time man gimme sme more!!" and I know the new stuff is good as I am a gram a day addict and it gets me spun.I smoke it. So I was wondering, what could cause them not to get as high? Would different PH levels effect this? Say if one batch was more Alkaline or Basic? As in, Freebase -> hcl step the cook didn't do it the same both times or what? The pic related batch has much bigger and smoother burning rocks. Other turns brown much quicker. Or did they just burn out or get a massive short term tolerance? The stuff they got from me was beter quality by far than what they're used to so I was thinking they got burn out from all the dopamine/serotonin being dumped. >see photo for hypothetical newest batch

/sci/, is there any book you would recommend for someone who's trying to better himself. I, since about 15, didn't do anything intellectually, destroyed myself with shit food/drinks, caffeine, being fat, everything wrong. I am now 22, I finally got the control back of my life, and I wish to read some "good" literature. I want something that will open my wisdom, make me think otherwise, make me more literate about everyday things so I can make better decision. Something along the lines of psychology or philosophy. I'm not an idiot however, but I just NEVER finished a book but one I just finished. I am starting my journey.

When will we be able to harness the power of quanta? Will this ever be possible? Are there any theories on how we'd go about doing it. Is there a massive amount of energy to be gained by single quantum interactions?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34_C1P8STto Is this at all realistic? Could you seriously be stabbed that many times and retain consciousness/enough muscle control to pin someone against a wall?

Why is some science being censored or discouraged because of morals and politics? I'm thinking specifically researching possible differences between human races and genders. It's sort of like expecting nature to be more politically correct, isn't it?

Why don't we have a Dyson-Harrop satellite yet? It's entirely physically plausible, and the only thing really holding it back seems to be the dispersion of power-transmission lasers over long distances. If we just implemented a "relay" system so that individual lasers never had to travel too far, then I don't see why it wouldn't work. For (probably) less than 20 billion dollars, we could have more power than the human race could ever use in the conceivably near future.

“Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't.” ~ Mark Twain What are some facts about the universe that are stranger than anything from fiction? Since nothing paranormal or supernatural exists, then I'm sure has to be plenty of realistic bizarre things in our universe!

What does he do to benefit scientific pursuit/interest? I'm not antagonizing, I just would like to know how he is influencing anything of a scientific nature.

Are plants still scientifically interesting? Does studying them have any big theoretical implications about how we understand life and the world, or does botany just focus on making more efficient crops for Monsanto?

Would anyone have a screenshot of the completed maths exercises on the Khan Academy. I have done most of it myself but I don't think I will complete it all before I have to hand in some paperwork. The skill progression screen would be perfect. If someone could get me one it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey /sci/, I really didn't know where else I could ask this, so I need help with a work I got about jet engines. I need to know the differences between annular type and can type combustors/combustion chambers and I need to know at least one advantage or disadvantage of annular type combustor.

If we already have a helium shortage, how does google expect to maintain a fleet of tens of thousands of internet balloons? Hypothetically solar power and electrolysis could make clean hydrogen to lift balloons. And what happens when internet broadcasting equipment starts falling from the sky? Those balloons don't fly forever.
