There's something I've always wondered about. Why are little kids so cock hungry for sugar? I mean it's not like how an average adult loves money or sex and are willing to do almost anything for either. For kids they seem to crave sugar more than a crack whore craves heroin. Why is this? What evolutionary purpose could this serve?

Captchas

Whenever you post, the captcha contains two words: an easy one and a hard one. Did you know that only the hard one is the real captcha? The easy one is taken from a scanned book that you are unwittingly typesetting. Every hour whole books are typeset thanks to the internet.

Just watch gravity - (probably dumb) question for you guys The earths magnetic field extends pretty far into space right? Would it be possible to use rotating magnets or some electromagnet kind of like a "magnetic sail" as propulsion eliminating the need for some sort of mass to push off of? >magnets

Hey /sci/ Are you like, real scientists, like the guys in the big bang theory? Or are you just, like, readers of pop science books

I am thoroughly confused by this. I figure I need to use the dependence tests [v1 v2 v3 | v4] or [v1 v2 v3 v4 | 0] but the fact that there's a 0 row fucks the second method up and there are a ton of different combinations for the first method. What do?

Someone wrote a little cipher on my dorm room's whiteboard. Unfortunately, it's VERY little, and no clues were given. Spaces weren't preserved, which makes it harder. Can you guys help? Transcription: OFWAIHHBT NTKCTWBDIEA IIIH Alternatively: OFWAIHHBTNTKCTWBDIEAIIIH I'm not sure if there is any significant to there being three lines or not. Letter frequencies: I 5/24 H 3/24 T 3/24 A 2/24 B 2/24 W 2/24 C 1/24 D 1/24 E 1/24 F 1/24 K 1/24 N 1/24 O 1/24 It's not a Caesar cipher, that's about all I know. I'm fairly certain we're only dealing with alphabetical characters (no encoded punctuation).

What makes the theory of evolution a theory and not fact? What defines a theory and what defines fact? Surely evolution is a fact considering it has been proven over and over again. This isn't a debate thread, just why is it still a 'theory' from a scientific perspective?

Has Dawkins made any worthwhile contributions, or is he just a glorified science teacher and popsci writer?

Let's discuss the probability of space colonization in the (hopefully) near future and the pros and cons of doing so for government/privatized business enticement > general pros Untapped resources All the fame, forever Unbelievable amount of loyal employees ready at anytime An assload of scientific advancement and seed for more > cons Expensive as fuck Possible tension from the government Risk of outright failure and deaths

I'm lost on my last hw question... I attempted to solve it for 2D and completed the square to get (x)^2+(y-4.5)^2=(4.5)^2 ... So then I think it's a cylinder in 3D, but I'm completely confused because it should be theta invariant right?

hey /sci/ just saw this http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/149106-the-first-real-high-resolution-user-configurable-bionic-eye and I'm wondering. If we can already mimic human sight, how long till we can use the technology as a possible substitute for conventional computer screen interfaces?

Are any roots of any degree that aren't already perfect powers (as in, not sqrt(4), cube root(27), etc) NOT irrational?

Can /sci/ give me a good rec for understanding the standard model? I'm a math gradfag who's currently working on Hawking/Ellis for relativity and a couple books for quantum mechanics (which is easier since I have a lot of experience with functional analysis). I'm almost done with school and would like to absorb as much of this stuff as I can before I have to get a real job. I'm looking for a book that will ease me into the standard model without tiptoeing around the mathematics. Papers are obviously welcome too.

I live in Illinois and have been reading about mini earthquakes or icequakes occurring in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Could abnormally cold temperatures over a sustained period of time have ANY effect on Yellowstone? Forgive me if this question seems silly.
