CS is destroying other STEM professions

Dear /sci/entists, looks like computer scientists want to destroy our jobs and our futures: >It is an invisible force that goes by many names. Computerization. Automation. Artificial intelligence. Technology. Innovation. And, everyone's favorite, ROBOTS. >Whatever name you prefer, some form of it has been stoking progress and killing jobs — from seamstresses to paralegals — for centuries. But this time is different: Nearly half of American jobs today could be automated in "a decade or two," according to a new paper by Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael A. Osborne, discussed recently in The Economist. The question is: which half? >Another way of posing the same question is: Where do machines work better than people? Tractors are more powerful than farmers. Robotic arms are stronger and more tireless than assembly-line workers. But in the past 30 years, software and robots have thrived at replacing a particular kind of occupation: the average-wage, middle-skill, routine-heavy worker, especially in manufacturing and office admin. Besides CS, which other STEM professions have the highest chance of survival from this incoming onslaught? Can pure mathematics survive attack of the theorem-proving AI? Also, what are the odds that CS people will succeed at this plan? It seems that low to medium paying medical positions (RN etc) are relatively safe for now. http://www.businessinsider.com/robots-overtaking-american-jobs-2014-1 Pic related… if your job or future job is on the right, you're fucked.

Seriously it surprises me how many people don’t know a couple things about pregnancy and babies: women would not survive 10 months of pregnancy they would die A baby is nowhere near as developed as it should be to be out in the world at 9 months, but the human body has not evolved to push anything past the size of the head out, everything else the baby is can stretch and squash but the head the vagina can’t handle anything bigger than the head at 9 months of development so we have to give birth. But babies actually need longer than that, really, it’s why they’re such a mess when they’re born and why they’re completely dependent on care, can’t walk, can’t do anything. Note most other animals can when they are born. Babies are born too early, it’s kind of a huge and secret flaw in human evolution. I found it really interesting, so thought I’d share.

Opportunity's Decade on Mars On January 25 (UT) 2004, the Opportunity rover fell to Mars, making today the 10th anniversary of its landing. After more than 3,500 sols (Mars solar days) the golf cart-sized robot from Earth is still actively exploring the Red Planet, though its original mission plan was for three months. This self-portrait was made with Opportunity's panoramic camera earlier this month. The camera's supporting mast has been edited out of the image mosaic but its shadow is visible on the dusty solar panels arrayed across the rover's deck. For comparison, a similar self-portrait from late 2004 is shown in the inset. Having driven some 39 kilometers (24 miles) from its landing site, Opportunity now rests at Solander Point at the rim of Endeavour Crater. Tomorrow's picture: sun day

I've always been told that they big bang lead to the hydrogen burning reactions & this lead to formation of subsequently larger elements. Every single inorganic chemist that I have spoken to has parroted the idea that by the time radioactive nickel was formed the reaction curbed and formed a glut of iron. If this is the case, why are there so many transition metals and main group metals that exist naturally in high abundance with masses larger than iron (or radioactive nickel)? Please do not discuss the "island of stability" or other such ideas in this thread. I want a "gen chem" explanation.

What would happen if they sent a space probe to Mars that contained a whole bunch of different Earth micro organisms? Like a variety of bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae, lichens etc. Would anything like that from Earth be able to survive and reproduce? Or something more simple and cheaper to achieve: Has any one done on experiments on Earth where they have recreated the environmental conditions on Mars and seen what happens when you introduce simple organisms into it? It would be sort of interesting to see if simple Earth creatures could survive and adapt to conditions on a planet like Mars. Perhaps even chuck a few hardy plants and insects into the mix. Even if the stuff like the insects and plants die due to lack of water and other factors, surely some of the bacteria would be able to survive?
