Hi /sci/,
Is it normal that one has to do a ton of exercises to learn the material in math courses? I find that I cannot just read a chapter and absorb the information that way; I gradually learn from doing exercises. Is this normal, or am I just really slow?

Everyone learns in this way. Some do exercises in their heads as they read, or come up with their own problems and think about them... but it's a fundamental part of learning to solve problems and experimentwith your newly-acquired knowledge. It's how you link those ideas to others.

If you're not writing research papers after reading through a couple math textbooks, you're pretty much an engineer.

engineers are smarter than pretty much everyone in most of society but compared to other specializations in sciences they are as gas station attendants to henry ford

the best way is doing exercises

I've never seen anyone learn anything difficult without doing this. You must have supreme reading and logic skills to be able to instantly pick up subtleties that you learn by doing an exercise, getting it wrong, then correcting your misconceptions.

to me math was always impossibly abstract to learn. i was actually a failing student growing up until one day i decided to study my ass off in life.

literally everything else comes easy to me. creative writing, speech writing, biochemistry, physics (my major).

Yes, why do think learning is hard? Did you not realize that it takes meaningful effort? Are you a shounenshit character that takes 300 episodes to realize that you were a stupid baka all along? Did you not realize that you were living your life incorrectly?

Not that guy, but if engineers aren't smarter than the majority of the population (excluding scientists) who would you put in that group?

most of them are, but they're still stupid :)

Well, I can agree that most people that are smarter than the majority still aren't that smart (speaking as one of the people who are only slightly smarter than the common man.) Though it sounds like you think you're part of the smarter than above average crowd. What makes you think that?

Even politicial `scientists' and biologists are smarter than engineers. Engineers are the bottom of the barrel.

It's normal, in fact it's recommended.
