Today was a repeat of yesterday. Tomorrow will be a repeat of today. Nothing ever changes on this little island of yours. This endless cycle feels like it is going to swallow you up. Even your frustration has become mundane. Once again, you missed the train on your way back home from classes. Normally you would wait for the next train to arrive, but decide to break the monotony by taking the bus at the station.
You climb aboard the bus and fling some cash for the driver, not even bothering to give him a second glance. Too exasperated to care, you grab the first open seat you see, right by the back left wheel, and prop your arm up on the window sill. Your mind wanders to how Professor Earl decided to rant about the UN Security Bill so much that Ramos, the groundskeeper, had to take him out of the room.
You begin to doze off.
"Hey, Captain," a voice reaches your ears, "You late too?"
Huh? Captain? You open your eyes and locate the voice. The dark hair and eyes aren't very memorable, but you the plaid skirt and tan blazer are part of your school's uniform. If she recognizes you, she must be one of your classmates. Her name was...what was her name again? You don't really talk much with your peers so you tend to forget.
This little surprise is throwing you off your game, but maybe you better say something...
>Ask what she meant whens she called you Captain
>Give a non-committal stock response
>Don't say anything, you don't even remember her name.

Tell us what makes YOUR setting a special snowflake. Feel free to provide critique on each other's ideas.
I'll go first:
Magic is based on channeling ghosts into offensive, defensive, or counter spells. The type of spell produced depends on emotional state that characterizes the ghost.
The nonhuman races are reptilefolk.
Magic, swords and guns exist within the setting. As do power lines, the oil industry, Some cultures see magic as an affront to the dead and do not practice it. Some practice it as a matter of spirituality, in which case they freely teach their own people how to use magic. Those that leave the motherland are murdered by assassins to prevent their techniques' secrets being leaked. Others have engineered spellshot, which contain offensive magic in small doses. Perfect for those who can't cast spells. Other bullets are simply as they are in our world.
Some swords feature bullet-dampening sorcery, while other sword-using cultures make use of various poisons, neurotoxins, and an intimate knowledge of the environment to compensate for lack of projectile weapons.

2034. It is an Earth much like our own. Barring, of course, the fact that populations are a good chunk larger, taxes are higher, and gas is more expensive. On the plus side, though, the Packers still won't go to the Superbowl.
Also, it turns out that Earth isn't the only planet that humans have a shot at colonizing. The exact origin of the technology isn't apparent, beyond the fact that it guzzles energy like you used to during a bad blind date. What is known, however, is that it enables matter transportation in an effect that scientists are scrambling to properly identify. This transportation has been mostly a messy affair except for four given days throughout the year -- four points evenly spaced, every three months. On these four days, the transportation effect stabilizes, capable of creating a stabilized gateway. A rift to another world, a world with breathable air and a terrain that -- according to initial cartography -- seems to be much like Earth.
A world that is inhabited by many strange and new things. A world quite unlike our own.
It is a new dawn in the history of Earth. What role shall you play in it?

(Muttering) Good gods, not this shit again (Muttering)
Hello team thirteen. It is now time for your SPECIAL class. Since you have failed swordsmanship, archery and even formation marching, we giving you a SPECIAL role that is nice and easy. This is a mace. You hold it by the non spikey end and use the spikey end to hit stuff with. You will also get a shield, which you hold in front of your torso like so. Your job is an important one, you will be the first to run towards the enemy and you will hit them on the head until they are all dead. Now take your mace and hit those scarecrows over there until you get the hang of it. I will be over here having a drink.
