KOs of 3rd party addons

I'm looking to get some KOs of 3rd party addons (Shadow Scyther & SG Commander), and I'm wondering if I should get KOs of the base figures to go with them.
I own the original figures they're meant to go with, but I'm not sure I want to use them.
Using a KO as a base figure:
Pro: no damage to the valuable original. Can display it separately. (Can hypothetically sell the add-on set later as a complete set.)
Con: Probably not as strong. For Commander this could be really drastic and completely eliminate the ability to hold the big gun. (but who does that?) Also costs more, ending up costing as much as an original add-on set at retail.
With how loose the Commander armor attaches, maybe there's no danger of scraping the paint on the shoulders or forearms, and I don't think the leg paint is in danger, but it might scrape the plastic since it's a really tight fit.
I don't know how the Protector add-on armor is attached, but it doesn't have anything like that, does it?
I wonder if I should even get Shadow Scyther... He's not purple enough. and I need his scythe recast in translucent red plastic. :P
and I want regular Protector as well, but the only Rodimus I own is the 2-pack version which apparently looks bad in the armor.
ptptptptptpt. Maybe I'll just put it all off like I do with everything, and then it'll be unavailable and the decision will be made for me. (I still haven't picked up a MakeToys Giant set after ALL these months after deciding I would.)
