Banking safety

To anyone on /trv that has backpacked or stayed abroad for long periods of time how did you manage your banking and keep your account safe? I have a fear of getting my debit/credit cards skimmed or stolen.. I came up with a plan but I am not sure how realistic or possibly overly cautious this is. I have a plan that involves using 2 completely separate banks/checking accounts, 'A' and 'B' 'A' will only have a maximum of $4,000 USD in it and I'll use that for all ATM withdraws and any card swiping. Transfer/wire money monthly to keep it topped up to around that 4K amount. 'B' will be my main USD tank that I transfer funds from; then never use the associated debit card to keep my savings safe. Keep the associated card in a money belt or leave it back home even. Has anyone done a similar scheme to this? My main difficulty I see is the wiring of money out of my 'B' account. It seems most banks wont allow more then $500 to be transferred between banks without a lengthy process of faxing and verification.. Would just keeping a single bank account and using a credit card as my 'A' be a bit easier? (As credit cards are much easier to get refunded on for fraud; I would just pay it monthly from my savings..) About to go on a ~2 year backpacking trip in March I've been planning/saving up for since 2009; this issue is one of the stresses I've been thinking about. Just want to see what some of you have done in terms of banking/money safety.

Me and a friend (both from England) are looking at doing a working holiday in Australia starting from early December this year. We'd fly to either Brisbane or Sydney, find a hostel and immediately start looking for jobs. We both have experience and references for bar jobs. I was wondering if /trv/ could help advise on: > How easy will it be to find jobs? > Brisbane vs. Sydney? > How much money will we need to take? > Will we be able to support ourselves living out there for an extended period of time?

Hey there /trv/ mates. Long time lurker. This Saturday I'm starting my cross country journey through the US. I'm from New Hampshire and I'm making my way down South for the winter. Will be gone for about five months before coming back up for PAX East in Boston in March. I'm going all over. Does anyone have any recommendations for natural wonders to see (besides some of the obvious). I'm also trying to recruit someone to come along with me. I've tried Helpx (which I'm also using for when I travel) but most of my companions who are interested turn flat and change their minds. Is there some other sort of traveling site that you can find a companion? Any and all advice would be much appreciated.

I'll be flying into LA on the 27th Nov and i have 2 weeks to find 6+ seated Car/Van to drive down and around Central America for 3 months. Is it best to look at hostel notice boards or shop online? If online would you please recommend some sites to start looking at. Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated. In return i will answer any questions you might have about traveling Australia.

Headed to Naples in about 2 weeks on extremely short notice, I do not speak Italian but I am fluent in (central American) Spanish. Will I have to cram, or will I be ok as I am. Of course I'll cram italy-ese before I just want to know if I'll be ok if I decide.to go out or something

I've just graduated from college and considering relocating to Burlington. How hard is it to find work there? I have a B.A. in Sociology so I don't expect my degree to help me out very much.

/trv/! I'll be headed to Chile in a few months. The trip will be my first time in Latin America/Chile and I was wondering what I should bring (necessities or things that may not be obvious until one gets there). Thanks!

Are there any people on here who live in Sweden, specifically around Lund? I just got accepted to Lund University for a study abroad program that starts in mid-January and ends in late May/early June. I'm just wondering what I should expect when I get over there, and what I should do to get the most out of my experience. Also, do you have any suggestions on what I should do to prepare? For example I was thinking of rooting my Galaxy S3 and unlocking it so I can switch providers to a Swedish phone provider so I can use my phone over there, would that be a good idea? Any advice is welcome, I'm really excited for this but I want to make sure I get the most out of it. For reference I'm a junior in college (3rd year) in America right now.

Hey /trv/ how much does it cost to just run away from life for like a year? I have about 6k in the bank and a year left at the uni and I just have to take a break. Are there any books on how to travel around the world cheeply, and relatively safely? I was thinking about using freighter travel to get to europe (http://wikitravel.org/en/Freighter_travel) and starting from there. Are there any books on exactly how to go about this? Can I even afford it? I know I wont be living in luxury. Honestly I'd be happy sleeping in a tent as long as I was somewhere relatively safe.

I've been stuck at my dead end job here in New Jersey so I've decided to try my luck elsewhere in other nearby states. I don't know the first thing about applying for work out of state. How to handle long distance interviews, how to quickly get housing until you can settle down and find something perfect, the works. Please give me any advice you have on what to do in this situation.

Motorbikes in SEA; am I going to need a suitable jacket? Or should I just follow this woman's lead? I'm honestly a little bit scared of dying.
