Having worked in the UK forever and finally coming into some money, I'm desperate to get away somewhere. I have my heart set on Iceland due to my love of seafood, Arctic climates/landscapes and a desire to see the northern lights.
However, due to my fleetingly short holiday allowance, ill likely be able to spend no more than a week there.
My question to you therefore, is how do I make these hours last? Theres certainly plenty of tours kicking about but I reluctant on the basis that the tours will likely be touristy, directed and full of noisy swarking humans (exactly the things im trying to avoid). Im not AGAINST the directed activities that some companies provide, its just a disdain for overspending and spoonfeeding.
TL:DR: How do I get the most out of a weeks trip to Iceland?
Issues in India

Hey there guys,
I'm soon going to do my first trip to India. I've been travelling for more than a year in total until now, including South East Asia, Aus/NZ and all over Europe (I'm European).
I would like to ask you about certain safety/health/general handy issues that might help me during my stay. We (my gf and me) will be travelling down the West coast by train and possibly bike, starting in Mumbai and hopefully skipping Goa as I'm not into backpacking chavs on acid.
What are you some things to mind?
I think I haven't given all these issues a lot of thought since I've never had a single bad experience in all my travels and grew up relatively unharmed in a rather sketchy area. I'm aware of the general knowledge stuff that I'll most likely get sick and not believing cab driver's recommendations about that awesome jewellry shop.
Started hearing a lot of bad stories from friends, though. What is /trv/'s opionion?

What's up /trv/
This is a Rio thread. I'm planning to visit some friends in Sao Paulo end of January and I'll be stopping in Rio for 3 days on my way in. I checked the "stay safe" section on wikitravel and it seems like a gigantic shit/mughole of a city (SP might be too but at least I'll be with locals there).
Well I managed to find myself a nice little appartment in Ipanema for a reasonable price, but I'd like some advice and opinions on the city in general. Here are some questions :
-Socially, how is it gonna be if I'm alone ? Easy to hit on girls ? Open to foreigners ? Physically ? Is it easy to meet people at a bar/on the beach/whatever ?
-How is the hostel world like in Brazil ?
-What are some touristy sights worth seeing besides Jesusaõ Christaõ statue ?
-Non touristy ones ?
-Favela tours, worth it ? Would going alone really be that suicidal ?
I think that's all for now, I won't be there very long so I'm not really looking for museums (except if there's a truly amazing one), just to get a general feel of the city, see some of the main things and not-so-main things and have a few drinks.
Thanks for reading !
