So very very soon I will be walking from my current location (Lenwood California) to San Francisco. While I have been trying to find a good route most walking maps seem to lead through peoples backyards or other unsafe environs so I am trying to find a decent route. I've never used this board before so hopefully you guys can help me. I'm an experienced walker, but what I need to know is a good route or any other advice you knowlegable folks may be able to give me. Thanks

moving to Newport News

So, I'm moving to Newport News, VA, for reasons. Never been there before, what's the public transit system like? Will I have to get a car? or is biking viable? also, any neighborhoods to avoid, or to be preferred?

Peace Corps

Hey /trv/, I applied for the Peace Corps earlier this summer and am still in the application process, on the final step. The program that was chosen for me was TEFL in Nicaragua and it seems like I stand a very good chance at getting it, barring unforeseen circumstances. My question is, has anyone done TEFL through the Peace Corps or in a very rural area, particularly in Latin America? How hard is it? What should/how should I prepare for it? What kind of time will I get to do a little domestic travelling of my own?

SOLO travel

I'm planning on solo backpacking in Europe next year around March or April. I'm really just dying to get out of the country. What are some nice places to visit? I have friends in Germany and Holland so Hamburg/Amsterdam are a must. I really would like to experience some beautiful scenery. Any advice where else to visit in that vicinity? Also has anyone traveled alone? Feel free to share your experience/tips.

Why shouldn't I move to the beautiful Land of Fire and Ice? >inb4 the language difficulties >inb4 the food and the cost of >inb4 the weather and the day/night cycle >inb4 the environmental dangers I've planned for this. So what else is there that might put people off? I'm very passionate about politics, so that kind of thing will matter. I could have posted on the other Iceland related thread, but I figured it'd be easier to keep the discussion channeled if I made a new one. Thanks in advance, this is my first time on this board, and I might be a regular, as I love to travel.

Hey /trv/ I'm going doing a ski season in Europe this coming winter, then afterwards I want to head to New Zealand for the season down under. Anybody had experience doing it? Finding work, visa's etc. Any information/tips etc is most welcome. Any stories too? I'm currently in the very early stages of planning but what I want to do is start in Christchurch then work my way south taking in the different resorts. Any help most appreciated.

Amsterdam for a few days

Arrived in Amsterdam today. We're all aware of the Red Light District and that weed is legal. Beyond that, anyone know of any good non-museum things to do? So far, found a House of Bols thing and a cocktail cruise that sound interesting. Any other decent ideas that dont involve prostitutes/drugs? Also, where are some places to eat - both quick stuff like the döner kebabs or sit down lunch/dinner options?

hey /trv/ I was in Nicaragua back in 07 for about a week. While I was there, we had rice and beans for every meal. I've tried a few prepackaged options, but they weren't the same. I thought I'd check with you and see if any of you had a good recipe. Thanks.

>marrying total hottie next September >wanting to take a long trip to Europe in October >she's never been before, I've been to Spain >budget: $5K-15K >type: romantic, relaxing, historic, diverse (not backpacking) Where should we go? Package tour? Many destinations or few? We have $15,000 to spend on this or to put toward other stuff. I'd be fine with spending way less.

bugging out-tropics edition

7 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
So, /trv/, I have decided to give up on the futile rat-race that is existence in the US, and as such am seeking (preferably tropical) alternatives. I have some savings that I plan to live off until I get settled in and find a job. While I was thinking the Caribbean, I would consider any like tropical islands (I.e. south pacific) where should I go? I like the bahamas a lot when we vacation there, ideally it would be a smaller community on a smaller island, sort of like what I've experienced on Eleuthera and cat island. any opinions?

$500 US travel; where to go?

6 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
I've been given a budget of $500 dollars to travel anywhere I like which means roughly one round trip ticket to either the west coast or east coast plus hostel/food money while I'm there. I'm in the midwest, so going anywhere worthwhile aside from Chicago is going to necessitate spending most of my budget on travel. I'd like to maximize distance and/or time for my budget. Suggestions on where I should go? I've been thinking west coast, specifically northwest.

trip to iceland

I would like to go to Iceland from the 30th of July to the 8th of August 2015 and I'm looking for some tips. My idea is to take the plane and to arrive in Reykjavik. For the first day I think I should book a room in a hotel or in a hostel and then, after the night I'd like to start walking around, go out of the city and sleeping in my tent through the campings in the south region. My hope is to reach the other side of Iceland on foot and maybe come back to Reykjavik by bus to take the plane to come back. My questions are about the cost of campings, the chance to camp freely, the cost of food, if I have to buy all the food in reykjavik or there are places on the way where I can buy food little by little, how much does it take averagely to go from the capital to the other side on foot, am I expecting too much? Do you think this holiday is possible? Thank in advance.
