Traveling while young

Should a person travel as much as he can while he is young? Does age make a big difference in how you are treated when you travel? I'm used to being cared for by locals, getting invited into people's homes to meet their families or to spend the night. I suspect it is largely because I'm in my early 20s that people want to take care of or impress me (I guess being courteous and multilingual helps too). I've heard these words at least half a dozen times: "My mother/father/grandparent likes you. They say you must think of them as your [nationality] mother/father/ grandparent." It's a pretty goddamn warm and fuzzy feeling. I imagine when you are in your 30s, 40s, 50s and in a foreign country, people see you as more self-sufficient and respectable, and so hesitate to approach you in the spirit of hospitality. Is this true? I don't really care about socializing in hostels or wherever. In just thinking of interactions with locals.

Hotel Reward Programs?

3 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
Greetings fellow /trv/elers! I was wondering what your thoughts were on hotel reward programs (where you earn points for every dollar paid that can be put towards free rooms and such)? I am an American who is not a super-frequent traveler, but would like to take advantage of these programs if they are worth it. Is it simply cheaper in the long run to book through a third-party site like Agoda than a reward program?

Budapest, Prague, Berlin

I'm a single guy traveling alone. How long should I stay in each of these cities (Budapest, Prague, and Berlin)? What would you recommend with things to do, see, or eat? And which city/country has the prettiest girls in the region?

Hi guys. I've had this fantasy of travelling Europe for some time and maybe now is my best chance in life for a long time. I was thinking low-cost travel, so mostly staying at affordable Hostels and getting cheap bus tickets, making ones own food and so on... Do you have any general hints and what is important to think about? What not to miss? What to avoid?

How do you deal with travel fatigue? I'm not talking about jet lag, just travelling for extended periods of time. When everything starts being the same. Just another museum, landmark etc.

First time in SE Asia

19 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
I plan to go travelling for the first time ever later this year. Thailand and probably travel through Cambodia and Vietnam too. Standard stuff. My plan was to start in Bangkok, head North to do the loop and then down the islands. I even thought about the Philippines too but that would probably be stretching myself too thin. About me, I am 32 years old and live in the UK. I'm single, broke and basically have nothing going for me here. I've never travelled anything other than shitty package holidays. I have a small amount of savings (just under £2000) and can probably raise another £500 or so before I leave. Basically, I reckon I can budget hard and hopefully last 2+ months on the road. I've done lots of research so far but its beginning to make my head spin now. I know that I just need to buy the ticket and go. And that is what I intend to do. But I thought I'd just ask /trv/ for any advice and ask for any recommended good sites or links I might have missed. Does approx $5000 seem a realistic budget for 2 months in SE Asia? I was planning to go mid-late September and return before Christmas. I will drag the trip out for as long as possible with the meagre funds I have. Any tips from seasoned Southeast Asia travellers much appreciated

Domestic US Travel

0 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
Hey guys, My dad likes to hassle me about not being very interested in domestic tourism. I'm 21 and have been to several dozen different countries by myself but never traveled west of the Mississippi River. I'd definitely like to hitchhike California and see the surrounding sights, but Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and San Francisco just aren't very high up on my "to do" list right now. I feel like getting around the States, for a budget traveler, is much less convenient than Europe or Asia - there are few hostels, even small cities have low population densities and are very spread out (with several notable exceptions), and you pretty much have to have a car to comfortably get around. What does interest me is nature tourism, like seeing the Rocky Mountains or walking part of the Appalachian Trail. Other than that, I don't feel like I'm missing out on much by not having been to Texas. Is this a very ignorant feeling for me to have? The way I see it is that I'm probably going to live most of my life in this country, and it's a lot easier for me to break loose now and go see other places before I have a family and career; the Grand Canyon can wait until I have enough money to pay for a nice hotel room and rental car. Are people from other countries very interested in traveling around the United States? (asking posters here; I know tourism statistics for cities like NYC speak for themselves) Have other young travelers here gone extensively around their own countries, American or not? tl;dr - family keeps guilting me about traveling to other countries but not going many places in America. Most of the US seems pretty culturally homogeneous to me, or, on the flip side, too hard to get around without paying a lot of a rental car and lodging. I figure I'll visit places around the country eventually, but is it weird to not care very much about being a domestic tourist versus an international one?

Taiwan Thread

I was recently informed that instead of spending the summer at National Taiwan Normal University in downtown Taipei like I had thought, I'm going to be living at...Kao Yuan University, in southern Taiwan, basically halfway between Kaohsiung and Tainan. I had a to-do list of all the things I wanted to do in Taipei ready, but I'm finding it's a lot harder to find information about this hinterland between Kaohsiung and Tainan. Anyone have experience with this area, or just southern Taiwan in general? What is a tourist to do?

Hey /trv/ I've been in Korea for 3 months now. It is better than I thought from the stories I saw online. So far I've gone on four mountain hikes, two festivals and two island camping trips. I live in Tongyeong. Anyone have any recommendations for some scenic places to go? If possible I'm looking for stuff that isn't in Seoul.

Hey /trv/, I'm 17 and since I was 10 I've always had an interest in Japanese culture, it started with ninjas and samurai's and progressed to the food and then to the people. I've never been there but I want to go check and see how it is for about 3 months and then make a decision whether or not I want to immigrate to Japan. Because honestly, Being a white person in south Africa is terrible. We are being discriminated against by the other races and the government. But basically I wanna ask if any of you know where I should study in Japan or even if it is necessary to study if I live in Japan? I mean I have the opportunity because my father said that he will pay for my studies if I decide to go. But yeah. Tell me some of your Japanese experience's and what jobs are available for an immigrant, Oh and ive been studying Japanese for a while, so I'll be able to talk a bit by the time I'm 18 or 19
