Hello, /trv/, I am planning on venturing to Iceland soon, and I was wondering if anybody on this board has any experience with this beautiful country yet. Any advice that might be beneficial to me, or perhaps recommendations for travel (self-tour, renting a car and adventuring, tour bus, et cetera). Thanks.

Why do people go on vacation in "Swedish woods" or "Danish coasts"? Germany has the same to offer for a fraction of the price and with slightly better weather. We have large areas of woods and lakes where one can go fishing and hiking as well (in fact Germany's hiking trails are 3 times as long as its inter-city roads). Furthermore Germany has a fair share of Baltic and North Sea coast. And just as Denmark and Sweden we offer autistic North Europeans, socialism and pork-based dishes. So why are there idiots who waste their salary in Swedish or Danish provinces instead of wasting half of it in German ones?

British Airways lost luggage

Hey /trv/ Flying two days ago from Edinburg to London Heathrow to Paris CDG with British Airways, my suitcase was lost and never arrived. I filed a complaint at the airport and was able to look at my file on "WorldtracerWeb" but the only message it displays is "Tracing continues, please check back later". It's now been about 36 hours and it seems like they haven't got any clue where it is, I have called the customer service and they couldn't tell me anything more. Something similar happened to anyone here ? Is it normal that they didn't scan it anywhere and can't even tell me in which airport it is ? In a more general way, what can cause a luggage to get totally out of the system ? It doesn't contain particularly valuable items and is a quite heavy suitcase. Thanks!

Hi /trv/, I planned a 9 day trip to Sweden. I am on day 4 and am having a bad time. Bad weather, not what I expected, etc... I'm flying KLM back to the USA on Tuesday afternoon. I'd like to call KLM and have them change me to an earlier flight home, like Sunday. What's the best way to request a change of flight? Does it cost extra? Thanks.

When you're backpacking, do you carry any sort of object for self-defense purposes? I'll be backpacking through south america and to many areas I'll be trekking in the wilderness, I suppose I need something more meaninful then just my wrists. Ideas?

Lets talk about languages /trv/ What languages can you speak? What have you found the most useful during your travels? How much effort do you put into learning the local language? I'm Australian, so naturally I only speak english (geographic isolation sucks). My partner is also Australian but speaks Mandarin, which was great when we travelled through China and Taiwan. I am learning Spanish, as I thought it could be the most useful given it's use in the Americas and Western Europe. However the more I dive into it the more hopeless I feel - is knowing terrible broken Spanish going to really help in Spain, when people will identify I'm not a native speaker anyway and probably use English? In my first trip to Vietnam I learned some of the basics, but I found it pretty useless... I could exchange some pleasantries but not really achieve anything else. Is this the wrong attitude to have?

Shows like Rick Steve's Europe?

This dude is so based, best travel show on TV. While every other show is about personal narrative, or comedy, or food this guy went right out of the gate giving us a to the point, educational travel show for people with limited resources. But sadly he only does shows for Europe and the occasional middle eastern country. Are there any other travel shows like this with an emphasis on practical travel advice? Specifically I'd love to find a show that goes to Southeast Asia and doesn't spend the whole time going "look how gross this food is now let's go fuck with a ladyboi."

Travelling to Rome for 5 days later in the year with my girlfriend. Thinking of surprising her with a day trip to a nearby town too. Looking for some opinions. Would a day trip to Naples or Pompeii or Pompeii/Vesuvius be more worthwhile. I have heard that a combined trip to Pompeii/Vesuvius is basically a full day (13hrs) from Rome, and generally you are better off on a bus tour as it will leave you right at the areas you need to go. It might be cheaper to faff around on trains to Naples and then down to Pompeii but we would likely be having to jump on a random bus or hike up Vesuvius alone. Any preferences or reccomendations ?

Random Traveling

Hello /trv/, at times I feel like I just want to travel with no clear direction or destination. As I'd be alone, social interaction would be welcome, be it a simple smalltalk with other passengers in the train or actually making new friends who are also traveling. I'm sure there are websites where you can meet stranger travelers? I imagine this board might also be a good place for that. Slightly related side-question: Is there a name for these closed group-cabins in trains (as opposed to the unfortunately more popular row design)? Is there a list of trains in europe that have this cabin design? I'd welcome if you could just name some trains/connections that use it. Many thanks.
