Paris Syndrome - what are the causes?

27 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
Most of you will have heard of "Paris Syndrome" where Japanese tourists in Paris have a mental breakdown when they realize that the reality of the city doesn't match the idealized fantasy in their heads. I think the media is primarily to blame for this. Paris is always portrayed as a sophisticated culture capital where beautiful models sip wine by the banks of the Seine in between shopping sprees in Louis Vuitton, with views of the Eiffel tower in the background. What I want to know is what exactly is it about Paris that triggers such an extreme reaction in Japanese tourists? The Wikipedia article mentions vague reasons such as the language barrier and exhaustion from jetlag and trying to pack too much sightseeing in one trip. But these reasons could equally apply to London or Rome. The lack of concrete discussion of this topic leads me to believe that the true reason is politically incorrect. Is it that there are too many immigrants in France? I've never visited the country but have read demographic stats online. I can only imagine how surprised the Japanese would be. They come from an almost completely ethnically homogeneous country where law and order rule. Africans and Arabs can come across as aggressive and threatening. Maybe I'm way off the mark? So tell me - what is Paris' dirty little secret that the guidebooks aren't telling me.

TAIWAN GENERAL

Hey /trv/, I'm currently living in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and will be heading to Taiwan soon. I'll be there for a few weeks and am pretty psyched to explore. Anyone been before? I'm more interested in being outside major urban areas and getting into the wilds. But I DO have a love for HK and that uber-dense urban madness. So a balance of both appears to be on the cards. I'm particularly seeking tips regarding: 1) Accommodations in Taipei. Hostel tier def a plus... don't have much in the way of $. 2) Hot springs and hiking! Anywhere off the beaten track where I could base out of for a week or so. 3) Quaint, quiet seaside towns where I could live cheaply while concentrating on writing for a week. 4) Artist-y spots, whether in Taipei or elsewhere. 5) Anyone had success couchsurfing there? 6) How about tent camping? 7) "MUST EATS" :D Many thanks for any info/recommendations you'd be willing to share :D

Camino de Santiago / Road to Santiago

Hello everybody, I've been thinking for a while now about walking the Route of Santiago de Compostela from my city, Toulouse. I've never done anything that challenging, I'm only 19 y.o, but I am in good physical shape, love walking, and even speak enough Spanish. So I'd like to know if anyone here has already done it, and to ask for any advice concerning...well pretty much everything. Which season would be best, should I book rooms for the nights between my walks or is it possible to camp most of the time, what kind of equipment I'd need... Also I'll add even if it looks easy on a map I know walking more than 1000km isn't a piece of cake, I'm not thinking about it like I think about a casual hiking day. So yeah I'm inexperienced and as such i'll take any advice but I'm not blind to the risks. It's not even a religious thing btw I've just been thinking about a long trip like this by myself for a while and this looks perfect (History, I can start from my home, landscapes seem interesting, and I've never been in those parts of Spain) Thanks, I'll check the thread regularly

Visiting Eastern European Cities

Going to be visiting family in Poland this summer. I plan on being with family for about a week and then dedicating the rest of my trip to visiting Budapest, Prague and Vienna. I've never visited any European cities besides Krakow so doen't really know what to expect. How many days should I dedicate to spend in each city. How much should I be looking to spend for transport? Any recommendations for good spots to visit?

Norway

I'm going to be travelling to Norway and staying with older relatives for approximately a month. Most of them speak little to no English - some speak it well - and I don't speak a word of Norwegian. Do the young people there speak good English? How real is Janteloven? How fucked am I?

Israel

Has /trv/ been there? I'm thinking of doing a spontaneous trip to Israel in a few days. It's a very unique country so I figure it will be quite an experience to visit it. I'd also like to go to Jordan and visit Petra while I'm at it. Also if possible, take the bus to Cairo and see pyramids and then take the plane home. I wonder if all this is achievable or too dangerous, especially considering the situation in Sinai. Do you guys have any suggestions or experience advice you'd like share? Still not 100% if I want to go or not.

Trip cancelled

Hello /trv/, I had recently booked a trip on Trafalgar tours for March 7-17 for about $4000 for my girl and I. The trip includes lodging and travel between countries along with various tours. Unfortunately the cunts over there called me and left a message stating that they had to cancel due to lack of reservations. My question to you is, should I try to remake my trip on my own by booking separate hotels and transportation or just try searching for other tour options? I don't get to travel much so I don't know a whole lot about this stuff. My job won't allow me to change my vacation dates either. Am I fucked?

Migration to USA or CANADA?

33 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
hello. i am sick of my own country and looking to migrate to a far more developed country such as US or Canada. I am thinking of becoming a police officer and living in peace until the day I die. What are my options? I graduated from law school in my country and have no skills whatsoever. I have no intention of studying again and working as a lawyer. I would settle for a peaceful, average salary job. What should I do?
