Ok so I'm going to a place that involves SCUBA diving (Cancun, Cuba), but I'm worried about how much of my own gear I should bother packing. Is it worth packing like, my wetsuit, flippers, googles, snorkel etc.? Or should I just rent that crap to avoid having full bags all the time. I should specify that its not like... a 'SCUBA holiday', I will be doing other stuff... Thanks

sup /trv/. i've been studying in Bilbao (Biscay) for 2 months now, it is pretty cool here, but i haven't done anything interesting here, i mean, i dont know where to go, what to do, where to eat, and what not. I would like to discover the city as if i had lived here all my life, not the tourist stuff, but the hidden interesting parts, i'm spending here a year more, and i dont want to get bored. Interested in places to eat (i'm a foodie) kat'z like stuff, anything extreme sports related, and interesting places in general. Hidden quality places general thread or something.

Hey /trv/, I'm travelling to Iraqi Kurdistan (2 weeks), Iran (2 weeks) and India (5 weeks) in December through to February. I've booked all my flights and done all my visas, now I just need to think about where exactly I'll be going and what I'll be doing. Has anyone ever travelled to these places before and what sort of things should I absolutely not miss? Pic related, I'm flying into Irbil (Erbil), and from there flying to Tehran, and then from Shiraz to New Delhi, and then from Kolkata back home.

hey /trv/ so it seems like my life has come to a grinding halt where i almost died from an infection and with my young age i had a chance to reflect on my life and noticed all the useless unsatisfactory things in my life that arent worth spending my precious time on. in the process of gaining my strength back. im also in a situation where the apartment that i own might be a health hazard and if so i should be getting money from the government to move everything and cover my costs while it gets fixed which might take months. (old family building with other apartment owners) even if that doesnt happen im ready to up and leave what i have here once i throw it in storage. anyway, you guessed why im posting on this board its cause i want to travel, and have in the past but nothing that id consider backpacking. im hoarding my money and selling things to prepare for whatever the future holds. so i wanted to ask from other experienced backpackers a few questions: 1.) This would be my first time attempting stepping in to the unkown, what are the most important things to prepare / pack for the journey? 2.) i want to keep it simple and light, i have a hiking backpack for some simple things, a few pair of clothes and rain cover, hammock, notepad, camera + lenses (photographer) what are some must have things to be able to crash at a hostel/hotel or also live somewhere outside when you have to? 3.) i dont have an endgoal but i have 2 countries i call home and i have as an emergency go to place when the money runs out and i need to fly to a safe place where im taken care of. 4.) i want to avoid taking my laptop but will probably have my phone to use whenever i have wlan reception to connect with people / get information. is a temporary international phone plan a good option? 5.) has anyone had good/bad experiences with couchsurfing org ? 6.) what are the most important things you research about your destination/s to prepare for the trip? thanks in advance

Hey /trv/, Canadian here. Recently got a job in Hanoi, Vietnam (not teaching English, shockingly). While I'm excited, I'm also scared shitless. Few questions: - I hear public transit is shit. Should I invest in a scouter? Is it horribly dangerous? - How's the expat scene? - How easy is it to hook up in Hanoi/Vietnam in general? I'm guessing it'd be easier to go for backpackers/travelers, but what about local girls? I'm a decent-looking white guy in my early twenties, so I don't usually have too many issues with girls. I would've posted in the other Vietnam thread, but it's been derailed by Thai ladyboy talk. Thanks in advance.

The internet in the UK is terrible. We pay something like 70% more than most of the world for sub-par, inconsistant, censored connections. Now with the whole porn ban, chinese censors and tor/streaming sites being blocked, I'm thinking of moving somewhere better. Any ideas? The internet isn't my life, but living in a country thats becoming so censored is getting annoying, not to mention other reasons like possibly leaving the EU in a few years. I'd like to not be on a tiny island completely on our own if a war ever broke out. (I know proxy's can beat most of the censor problems, but fact remains that this country is getting more and more sheltered). I was thinking somewhere northern Europe, or Canada since that's basically a better England with a lot of the benefits of America. Pic unrelated

>Going into debt while traveling How common is this? If you've been in this situation how did you continue to enjoy your time knowing that the debt is piling up behind your supposedly carefree fun, waiting for you when you get home? Or did you just pack it in and go home? I ask because after traveling Oceania for 8 months I just opened my bank account to realize that I'll need to borrow even more money next month and I have 3 more months of traveling still up ahead. Shit is bothering me to no end.

WWOOFing as a means of travel

I see all of these threads about going to teach English abroad or about budget hostel backpacking, but I've never seen threads about WWOOFing. Any of you guys tried it? Can it be a good way to meet people and to discover another country? I'm thinking about going in New Zealand next year and I figured this would be a cool way to meet new people and have something to do there for a while as I get easily bored if I'm by myself for long periods of time. I don't plan on going for more than three months so I guess that obtaining a work visa especially with a "job" offer from the farmers would be simple enough (I'm a Canadafag, but I don't think it changes anything as far as 3-month visas go). I'm pretty much a hippie at heart and I'm used to do pretty hardcore manual labor as I've always helped my grandpa take care of his land, so that won't be a problem. Stories, advice and suggestions are appreciated.

We're all sick of this shit, I know. But this is a question for those who teach and who've taught in Japan. Something like 80% of the ESL job postings in Japan seem to list "must currently reside in Japan" as a prerequisite to be considered for employment. Does this mean they expect you to be living and working there, with experience teaching in Japan - or do they simply want you to be physically there for the sake of a face-to-face interview? Is it a good idea to just show up there and look for work?
