In about a year's time I will be going to China to teach English and improve my Mandarin. So, the biggest question right now is: "Which city should I live in?"
I've been to China a couple times; both as a tourist and a student. Some of the cities I've visited include Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'An, Chongqing, Datongshi, Jinan, and Tai'An. I also lived in Tianjin for a semester.
I've decided that I don't want to live somewhere that is heavily polluted like Beijing, Tianjin, or possibly Shanghai. My ideal Chinese city would have an interesting history, many things to do and see, scenic surroundings, and good food.
Some of the cities I've been looking at so far are: Guilin, Yangshuo, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Haikou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, and Xi'An. I wouldn't be above living in a second or third tier city though.
If anyone here has spent any significant amount of time in China, your input would be greatly appreciated.

So I just finished High School and I always wanted to visit another countries for the last 2 years, I am very good at English so that's a big plus when it comes to travel.
This made me consider international exchange programs, but since i finished HS i am not sure if there's any kind of program that doesn't include studies (not HS or University), so I'm looking around in the web for some exchange program more focused on cultural and social aspects than just studying, because those are my motivations to travel.
So basically im looking for an exchange program that doesn't necessarily make you study, but with the same system (host family and shit). Also if any of you have any exchange stories or advise feel free to post them

Never been to /trv/. Hope to hear you all out and not be called an faggot. Please read on.
I'm 23. Haven't done anything with my life. I'm fat and I might be an alcholic. I live in the midwest and I hate it.
I lost my job a month ago. I can't afford any of my bills. I've got seven dollars to my name. I am going through alcohol withdrawl because I haven't had a drink in a month.
I considered suicide, but I'm not going to do that. I'm not ready to die. I want to be a writer, and I want to see the world. So I've got a plan. I've got three jobs I might hear back from in the next two weeks. If I'm not hired at any of them, I'll put this plan into action.
I'll go back to see my family on Christmas. I've asked for gas money and whiskey. Save for my immediate family and two friends, I won't miss any of them, although lying to them that things are going well for me will suck.
I'll then make the drive back to my apartment, gather my things in my three bags ( as many clean clothes as possible, some toiletries, a few blankets and some books in two backpacks and one duffel bag), and throw them in my car. I'll leave my phone and laptop in the apartment, and make my way first south, to Texas, and then west, to California, where I'll abandon my car in the Los Angeles area.
From there, I'll try to grab showers as I can, which is a huge worry for me -- I'm slightly OCD about my appearance. But my time will be spent trying to do odd jobs such as dishwashing to get food, find a place to sleep, and stay warm and as safe as a man on the streets of L.A. can be. Getting in shape will be a goal, but I figure that I won't be able to bitch about that as long as I'm alive. Also, I'll be using a fake name, an anagram I've created on a nickname I gave myself after being dumped by my last girlfriend.
Any thoughts or opinions would be welcome. I'm not looking for advice, I'm convinced that this is my only option other than suicide, and I'm not ready to die yet.
Phuket, Knives and BB guns to Australia...

Im going to Phuket in about a week before heading to France and am looking to stock up on some top notch merchandise before i leave. Normally i just buy the normal tourist goods, but i was thinking this time of buying a knife or a BB gun and trying to bring it back into Australia. Worst comes to worse and i get caught, they can fine me up to $500 (maximum fine, normally they just confiscate the item). You have to remind yourself when thinking about this pirated DVD's are illegal, yet they let them through no worries, so i am wondering where they draw the line?
Also, im renting a motorbike for a few days while there, are there any interesting things to see or do that aren't marketed directly towards tourists or dont have (as) many tourists around it?
1. Is there any place that is significantly cheaper than the key tourist zones for general merchandise (eg clothes, shoes, electronics)? Im thinking maybe the weekend market, except from the sound of it its really marketed at tourists...
2. Do you have any hints for taking restricted import items into Australia? Im not talking about like Bombs, drugs or anything actually dangerous... Im thinking like a BB gun, lasers or a knife? Any, like smuggling techniques that i could use? Anyone had any experience with things like this?
I-35 Texas trip

So I'm going to Texas for Christmas vacations from next saturday to somewhere in early January. I'm going to be mainly visiting San Antonio, but I will pretty much go everywhere that crosses I-35 like Austin, San Marcos, Laredo (I know >Laredo).
My question is, what fun things can I do in these places? I'm going to be staying for almost 3 weeks, so I definitely need stuff to do there.
I checked TicketMaster for stuff like concerts and there's a concert for Jay Z in SA on the 20th, but that's about it. There's also a Deadmau5 tour in Hidalgo, TX but that's a bit far from my destinations so I probably won't attend.
I have actually never visited Austin, just passed through it. I was hoping there would be stuff to do there but TicketMaster had nothing for it.
