It's okay if you're just getting into the medium, but there are some (even here, on a so called ''film'' board) that actually believe they are cultured or have a snippet of taste because they like these directors, when in actuality they are nothing more than embarrassing cringeworthy copy/paste babbies with no opinion on the medium they claim to love whatsoever.

This demonstrates how delusional Tarkovsky plebs can be, that his detractors are inferior to them in that they are too quick to judge and aren't willing to dedicate as much thought as them.
But by saying this, also admit that they themselves have a problem with the pace of his films, as the only thing they can imagine as being a problem with his films are that they are too slow.

No, I don't think they're too slow, I think they're too shit.

OFFICIAL OBJECTIVE LIST OF GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME
What's the highest ranked film you've never seen? I've never seen L'Atalante- so I'm gonna watch it shortly.

I will explain my methodology with how I picked this list next:

So the sight & sound poll is considered the most prestigious poll in cinema for ranking films. They've run it every 10 years since 1952. The people who normally participate in the poll are either professional critics and directors (since 1992), so you know if they're choosing films they know what they're talking about.

how the poll works: they ask critics or filmmakers for their unranked list of the top 10 films of all time, and they tally how many films get mentions. the aggregate list is then shown in descending order of how many votes it got. it's a rank of consensus, not contrariness.

It's the opinions of professionals, not the subjective opinions of shitposters on /tv/ or retarded fedora wearing gay hipsters from reddit. it's people who know who they're talking about.

but the problem with the poll is it changes every 10 years. so in my mind the best films are the ones that are consistently on the poll since 1952 - longevity is the mark of universal greatness, not flavour of the decade. if a film is #6 on the list in 1982 but never shows up on the poll, is it really the #6 film of all time? I say no- and therefore, why should we trust any one year's list above another? the most universal films are great because they're ALWAYS great, not just once.

So what you could do is what TSPDY did, they combine all the ballots together, along with those from other lists so they get a lot of consensus and views.

the problem with that TSPDT ballot methodology is 1. it has critics not good enough to be on the sight & sound list alongside professionals. it's too much riff-raff. #2, it biases quantity rather than proportion on a year to year basis.

This is why patricians categorize movies in tiers. If movies have somewhat close quality then a person's preference between them is usually determined by other factors such as their mood or how it connected with their own experiences/world view

What you are talking about is attainable but the difficulty is immense and far less than 1% of people who actively watch film might be able to do it.

Maybe you are one of them, I don't know. But the point is that most people cannot do it so that's why putting things in tiers is superior.
