"We [director Jon Favreau and actor Robert Downey Jr.] read the script and it wasn’t really right, you know? We had two weeks’ rehearsal and we basically rewrote the script. And the day before we were going to shoot, we get a call from the Marvel guy saying, “Oh no, no, no. None of this is right.” So we would muster in my trailer and rehearse while the guys were in the studio tapping their foot, saying, “When are they going to come?” We were still trying to figure out the [scenes] we were going to shoot.

“They had no script, man,” Bridges exclaims. “They had an outline. We would show up for big scenes every day and we wouldn’t know what we were going to say. We would have to go into our trailer and work on this scene and call up writers on the phone, ‘You got any ideas?’

Bridges, director Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. would literally act out sequences during primitive rehearsals, Downey taking on Bridges’s role and vice versa, to find and essentially improvise their way to full scenes, the actor recounts. Bridges says that the entire production was probably saved by the improv prowess of the film’s director and star.

“You would think with a $200 million movie you’d have the shit together, but it was just the opposite. And the reason for that is because they get ahead of themselves. They have a release date before the script- ‘oh, we’ll have the script before that time’- and they don’t have their shit together.

you know what's even crazier? Marvel Studios made two movies at first. These two would determine if Marvel Studios would continue or if Marvel would just continue licencing their characters to other studios. The first movie was The Incredible Hulk, which was not a strong financial success. The next movie would have to be not just profitable but a fucking blockbuster for Marvel Studios to survive.

That movie was Iron Man.

old news. iron man 1 infamously has credited screenwriters who contributed nothing to the final product but piggybacked on its success.

it's also obvious just from watching the movie itself, and probably a big part of its success. the movie has such a fun, relaxed vibe to it. it's dialog, character interactions, and sense of pacing really are unique among action blockbusters. most scenes are just a few shots, mediums and wides, letting the actors play out the scene, very little coverage.

While I agree with what you're saying about IM, Fox's issue with the X-Men movies comes more down to Jackson, McKellan, and Stewart being the only actors who had the role, acting chops and charisma to headline a movie like that.*

Of those, Jackman is the easiest to put an advertising campaign around and Wolverine always had the comic book equivalent of star power too.

This being said I'm a bit tired of Wolverine being everywhere. The risk now is that it'll be Deadpool everywhere given its success level so I really hope they'll let it be its own thing and keep it off to the side.

*I think James Marsden where he is now has shown he could do it and might have been able to at the time as well, but Cyclops was written shit all the way through.

>Does /tv/ seriously like Iron Man?
Good dialogue, good sountrack, good effects. Also helps that it was fairly fresh in 08, most heroes were so goddamn stoic and bland, nice to see one that could have fun.

Also to quote Roger Ebert:
>Some superheroes speak in a kind of heightened, semi-formal prose, as if dictating to Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. Not Tony Stark. He could talk that way and be Juno's uncle. "Iron Man" doesn't seem to know how seriously most superhero movies take themselves. If there is wit in the dialog, the superhero is often supposed to be unaware of it. If there is broad humor, it usually belongs to the villain.
>How unique that Tony Stark wants to disarm. It makes him a superhero who can think, reason and draw moral conclusions, instead of one who recites platitudes.

>it was really refreshing in 2008 considering what most superhero films looked like back then

As someone who didn't watch a lot of superhero movies: what did Iron Man do differently?

Marvel should've stayed with paramount, Disney was the worst thing that happened to them(creatively at least).

and thats what makes it so great. that whole exchange feels natural, not the product of a carefully crafted script practiced over and over.

Jeff probably came up with the scraps bit after he had finished the first line, just like a real person in that situation would just come up with things on the spot

Fine, one exception. Iron Man is still better but not by miles, TDK doesn't have much going for it outside of Heath Ledger.

Wrong.
IM is really good, but TDK is better than people on here say.
The script was strong.

TDK and Iron Man 1 were like yin and yang.
Both were great, and they were so different they didn't really have to compete.

I guess no script is better than a bad script. Like based Bridges said, it probably wouldn't have worked if they didn't have so much improv talent involved in the production

As a DC fan I still like the first Iron Man, it's the best of the MCU.

Never. Hollywood already saw that coming and specifically created the "indie" genre to raise the barrier to entry so high that only what they fund gets any exposure.

I used to hate first the avengers movie, but after seeing cuck whedon's avengers 2 which was garbage, I rewatched it and now I consider it mediocre. What does everyone see in the avengers that I dont? Cap 2 and the first Iron Man are my favorites btw

You know how you can tell the first Captain America was fantastic?

You could replace the main theme with this and it would work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXbL0iukdCo

That kind of whimsical but serious tone is very hard to pull off
