Nier Automata is hardly as dense as people advertise it to be. I was really disappointed after slugging through 3 playthroughs waiting for something unexpected or thought provoking to happen.
If you have read any science fiction regarding consciousness or AI, you'll see all the tropes and expect something subversive. It never comes. If you've read the authors it references via character names (Sartre, Engels) you might appreciate the cameos, but it doesn't really explore existentialism or machine labour as a stand-in for capitalist dehumanization.
The narrative is convoluted with typical anime bullshit separating every 2minute segment of philosophical dialogue with 5 hours of monotonous gameplay. The game recycles its environment and enemy types far too much to get the praise it's getting. I realize it's the honeymoon phase and everyone is still unable to see its flaws, but the game is severely overrated from a gameplay and narrative standpoint.
The soundtrack however is divine and it will help ease the nausea of 3-4 playthroughs in the same small map.
