Q.what's the metagame like at the moment?
A. we’ve just had the dragon vault mini-set released, and our next set, Boundaries Crossed, will be available tomorrow. The top decks at the moment are: Hydreigon/Darkrai EX, Eelektrik/attackers, and possibly Keldeo EX/Blastoise. Some rouge decks include Terrakion/Garbodor and Gothitelle lock decks. Garchomp/Altaria did well in Japan, but its current "Top Deck" status is questionable at the moment.
Q.Is this game cheap to play?
A. comparatively, yes. We are treated very well by TPCi's publishers, meaning they give us 2 decks with every new booster-set, at least 6 promo tins a year, and lots of little things like promo-boxes and blister-packs. Single card prices are also a lot less than yugioh or magic.
Q. why shouldn't I run a ton of single copies of cards in my deck?
A.If you run more than one of an important card you'll have more chances to draw into it, thus making your deck more consistent (making it more likely that you'll pull off your strategy and win the game). Most decks run 3-4 of each of the extremely necessary or just plain powerful cards in that deck such as dark patch for darkness oriented decks, or rare candy for decks that include stage 2 pokemon.
Q.what cards would you recommend I buy, and why, to get me started?
A. in terms of a price:power ratio, buy the following
>2x Furious Knights deck
>1x voltage vortex deck
>1x Raiders (cofagrigus deck)
>1x zekrom EX promo tin or 1x Rayquaza EX tin
>1x Mewtwo EX promo tin
The above should give you a half-decent Eelektrik+attackers deck, for about £58/$95
