Steve Wilhite the creator of the GIF tells us GIF is pronounced "jif" and not "gif". What is /wsg/'s opinion?

If he wanted it to be pronounced "jif", he should have spelled it as "jif".

If he intended otherwise, then he can't blame anything but his own retardation.

I will probably always pronounce it with the hard G. It just makes so much more sense. I think it's funny that this guy is so blatantly challenged by so many people when he should, in theory, be the highest authority on the matter.

And how is the "g" in "graphics" pronounced?

It is it pronounced like a soft "g" like the "j" in "Jeff"?

Or is it pronounced like the hard "g" in "giant".

Who's the fucking mongoloid again?

>>
Anonymous 2013-05-22 17:24:31 No.169127
OP Here - I have always pronounced it "GIF", but will probably start pronouncing it with a "J" sound just to be a smarmy wiseass.

I just say its letters. Same for all types except .ogg. That is the correct way and no one will tell me otherwise.

The creator said it's pronounced 'jif', your opinion doesn't fucking matter. It's like asking what my opinion is of the distance between NY and LA.

wtf kind of logic is this. G is not always pronounced like "hard g". Sometimes it is pronounced like J especially before the vowels e and i.

You're an absolute idiot.

Take the upside-down crucifix, for example. The person that 'invented' it was St. Peter, who was crucified on an upside down cross. Yet we don't associate the upside-down crucifix with him, do we? No. It's a satanic/anti-religious symbol.

So, in regards to this: Big fucking woop that the creator said it's 'jif'. It's popularly known as 'gif' and that it what it is by virtue of being popular opinion.

There are hundreds if not thousands of examples where the original pronunciation is now rendered invalid due to how the masses speak it (such as aluminIum and aluminUm)

Graphics Interchange Format

'Graphics' has a hard 'g'. Should we now pronounce it Jraphics with a voiced palato-alveolar affricate?

he didnt create english or the pronounciation of the letter g. Honestly, he can say whatever he wants, the letter combination G I F is pronounced with a hard g in american english, and most people will say it that way. If your acronym needs a fucking pronunciation key, you've done something wrong.

...they do in speech.

Speech evolves based on usage, not based on dictionary definitions. Dictionaries end up changing their definitions and adding words based on widespread usage, not vice-versa.

Why you, noble anon. You are the fucking mongoloid. Again.

And, stop putting yout punctuation marks on the outside of your quote marks. Just confirms you for gay. As in, fagat gay, with a hard "g."

And this plays into what this anon >>169456 was saying.
I'm pretty damn sure none of you use words like faggot, queer and gay as they originally were. Words and speech change.
I don't care if the guy says its "jiff". I've always called it a gif, and will continue to do so.
Does it really matter that fucking much anyway....?

Anonymous 2013-05-23 04:44:13 No.169495
i say gif because in my mind it makes more sense to say it as if i were saying gift which is much more similar to it than jif peanut butter
