So I've been trying to remind myself why I became an atheist and thinking about the Biblical stories and how much sense they make to me now that I'm a non believer. One story came to mind that I just can't believe doesn't make religious people question the malevolence of Abrahamic god.
Story about the tower of Babel. if you don't know it do have a read. Basically long time ago all people in the world spoke the same language and had mutual understanding. In fact it seems that humans have progressed pretty far technologically and decided to build a really high tower to get on a god's level.
According to the story, a united humanity of the generations following the Great Flood, speaking a single language resolved to build a city with a tower "whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."[2]

God came down to see what they did and said: "They are one people and have one language, and nothing will be withheld from them which they purpose to do." "Come, let us go down and confound their speech." And so God scattered them upon the face of the Earth, and confused their languages, so that they would not be able to return to each other, and they left off building the city, which was called Babel "because God there confounded the language of all the Earth"

Now think about it. If that wasn't a dick move then I don't know what it was. And to think people worship this deity to this day. Makes me /facepalm so hard. The Abrahamic god we worship is jealous, patronizing and evil! It wanted to hold us down and succeeded. Why are we worshipping it?

OBVIOUSLY makes it not real

If there is any reason not to believe in a god/gods this would NOT be it man
Just because you dont like something doesnt change its validity

I really want to post an idea I have for a movie regarding this situation, but the last time I posted one of my ideas for something I saw it in a movie a couple years later, so I'm paranoid as fuck now.

Any way, yeah it's pretty obvious dick move, and the bible is full of them.

because no human has ever done anything worthy of my worship. why don't you try attacking some other equally fucked up gods and even more fucked up humans instead of acting like some whiny brat who's mad at their christian parents?

OP, you are obviously a manipulative fool.

The destruction of Babel is a judgement against an undeservedly proud humanity which allowed itself to be guided by malevolent, non-human intelligences, instead of worshiping god and adoring his creation.

It is also most likely an allegory, which makes you look even stupider as an avowed atheist trying to debate fundamental theological superstitions.

What's next? A thread about how Santa and the Easter Bunny and skeletons are only figments of our imaginations?

k, but I choose to
just because God can do things we perceive to be bad isn't enough for me to turn my back on my God

Anonymous 2012-12-27 18:19:19 No.11686664
no, slave mentality implies lack of choice. if god wanted slaves, nonbelievers would die the moment they reject it.

victim mentality, however, does often seek to blame it's own failures on the perceived shortcomings of others

you're right, you don't have to worship anything. that's why comparing it to slavery is ignorance.

Anonymous 2012-12-27 18:21:26 No.11686679
Dude, there are a whole bunch of things you are not considering, aspects to the story.
Personally, I feel that the tower of Babel is analygous of the culture destroyed by the flood. And if you want more info into what kind of stuff they were into, ask practicing kabbalists.
And in this I believe that the separation of languages was a result of human dispersal after the flood.

"The Aztecs' story maintains that only a man, Coxcox, and a woman, Xochiquetzal, survive, having floated on a piece of bark. They found themselves on land and begot many children who were at first born unable to speak, but subsequently, upon the arrival of a dove were endowed with language, although each one was given a different speech such that they could not understand one another."

Anonymous 2012-12-27 18:22:11 No.11686686
Native Americans -
" "Before the flood, there was but one centre; for all the people lived together in one country, and spoke one language."[3]

They did not know where the other people lived, and probably thought themselves the only survivors. Long afterwards, when in their wanderings they met people from another place, they spoke different languages, and could not understand one another."

Anonymous 2012-12-27 18:22:42 No.11686688
OP here. Nice try and no, I'm not gonna make such threads because people grow out of Santa and don't take him or Easter bunny seriously. Unlike god.

it's not gods fault that your parents lack a deep enough understanding of faith to force you to wake up early for church.

then again, if their forcing you to go to church, then you've probably already proven yourself to be untrustworthy of being left home alone, or you underage b&, or both.

Anonymous 2012-12-27 18:23:19 No.11686693
Greeks -
"In Ancient Greece there was a myth which told that for ages men had lived without law under the rule of Zeus and speaking one language, gifted to them by the god and goddess of ingenuity, Philarios and Philarion. The god Hermes brought diversity in speech and along with it separation into nations and discord ensued. Zeus then resigned his position, yielding it to the first king of men, Phoroneus."

Africans -
"The Wa-Sania, a Bantu people of East African origin have a tale that in the beginning, the peoples of the earth knew only one language, but during a severe famine, a madness struck the people, causing them to wander in all directions, jabbering strange words, and this is how different languages came about.

A god who speaks all languages is a theme among African mythology, two examples being Eshu of the Yoruba, a trickster who is messenger of the gods."

There are a whole bunch of ways of looking at it.

Anonymous 2012-12-27 18:33:05 No.11686750
This is just tales from other religions regarding the diversity of languages. In both of them the gods seem nicer than the Abrahamic gods. So why don't you worship them instead? Instead you worship the one that chose the worst way to go about it.

Meh, can't be bothered to explain. Some people will get this.
They are the same. Some religions have the Father as the only God and the rest being angels & demons.
Some religions call them all gods.
I chose to worship the one who made me.

Read scholarly texts. Understand meaning of the story.

No but really. The story of the tower of Babel is really just an ancient joke the Jewish people of the day made at the expense of their Babylonian conquerors.

Much is lost without having a solid grasp of when the story was written, who the audience was, and the politics of the day.

The first five books while based on earlier Jewish traditions have tons of reactionary commentary on other religions of the day, some if not most of said comments could be considered straight mockeries of the popular stories of the day.

yes the god of the bible is a giant cockmasher, but if that's the reason you became an atheist you are doing it for all the wrong reasons. he is just one god of many, the fact that people worship him blindly says allot more about them than the god

>Eshu of the Yoruba, a trickster

I read about that fucker. Something about how one day how he walked down the street wearing a red and black outfit that was red on one side, and black on the other. The people on one side of the street thought the outfit was red. People on the other side of the street thought it was black. So the people on both sides argued with each about the color of his outfit. The god found pleasure in their confusion and division and started laughing at them. What an asshole.

Tru dat.

I do think that is an interesting passage. The Koran teaches not to preach your religion to others, because it is God's will for them to be on the path they are on.

But then again a lot of born again Christians say that if you do not give testimony then you are committing a sin.

Tbh, objectively, the former understanding speaks more to my values.
But I have found that the more I believe in God, the more it comes into conversation. And I feel like I am doing wrong by not proffessing my belief.
I guess its the old not wearing your heart on your sleeve thing.

I just hate how they mention Nephilim a few times and that's it. No in-depth explanation of their origin. No explanation of whether they still exist and still walk among us. Nothing. It's total bullshit. But then again it was said that there was much detail and many books excluded in the final version of the bible. Whatever the people don't know, they can be controlled by the leaders that do know.

Here, for instance, I feel compelled to say something. But not because I want to convert anyone, just because it makes me sad to see people with that understanding of God.
My understanding of God is beautiful to me, and I guess i'm just trying to get people to see Him that way. But obviously, that is not my place or right.

I don't bring up God out of nowhere. I have a respect for everyone's beliefs, and not in a shitty condescending way, genuinely.
