1. cubing
A sporting activity revolving very much around the short story : The Most Dangerous Game

Often played with a very small group of people, if not alone, who meet on the internet in a very anonymous fashion in which they tell stories of past cubing adventures and plan, in a very vague manner so as not to draw attention to the actual actions of cubing, for future cubing events. Cubing is considered in all places that murder is.

Most participants of cubing are incredibly methodical as they create a sense of cat & mouse amongst their victims. They often work slowly around their prey gathering information before they strike, often with a blunt. Cubing is very much an internet created social clique, and those cubing often have grand pseudonyms they go by, both for creating an identity for themselves, and to keep their anonymity.

If you happen upon a cubing message board, you may have trouble keeping with the conversation, since all the members will undoubtedly post infrequently and once someone chances upon their deeds, will leave their prime meeting place on the internet in favor of another.

I just see one post referring to the children. It's by Jack the admin. It looks like the only post from 2013. It says "and so... the children awoke that year."

The homepage explains the project was some sort of broadcast hijacking (e.g. Max Headroom) that apparently made some people barf, etc. I'm mostly just skimming because there is a lot of words on these pages. There is this relevant info though to the message boards:

A group of "normal" people somehow influenced by something to become serial killers.
Now it is back in the form of videos that drove one person insane (gmiller), and possibly killed 1 or more people (Our WY friends).
The video lies to people.

This.

/x/, when can we make our own ARG?

One time I made a fake facebook teen for reason and added a bunch of people from the high school I used to go to. It caused a buzz for a couple days as everyone wanted to know WHO IS JENNA HALL?? I was in a position to tell them anything I wanted and I even set up a package for someone to pick up via GPS (a la Oversight scandal on /x/). I fucked it up though because I'm not that creative/didn't plan before hand.

tl;dr it should be easy why can't we do one

It's been attempted before, many times. It takes a lot of planning. I think the reason many ARGs fail is because people can't agree on the same ideas. Also I believe it gets to be a big responsibility. You have to make considerations for everything, including things that might go wrong. And there is a lot that can go wrong, from people not doing their part, to people spilling the beans.

One of the important things to get an ARG off the ground is trust. Honestly, most of /x/ is extremely paranoid. I suspect some posters are mentally ill. While we all love a good trolling, you know someone is going to take it too far - apparently like Joseph Bright.

That makes a lot of sense. But aren't those problem a result of having too large a team? If, for example, only three people living nearby to each other concocted something, maybe they could get something to work. I guess that eventually leads to my answer though... /x/ is best fitted to be the players of an ARG, but not the creators of one.

>But aren't those problem a result of having too large a team?

Yeah, pretty much. But a small team has its downsides too. If you have a smaller team, it means no one can fuck up- because no one will pick up the slack for you. In the case of multi-character ARGs, where much of the communication is done online, people trying to solve the ARG may notice distinctive posting styles among a small team.

One reason I personally wouldn't start an ARG is because I'd rather discuss and analyze than be a participant or be responsible for the planning. It's fun trying to figure one out though.

Yeah those are all some pretty good points. Maybe if I really wanted I could just set up a small one on my uni's campus. I kind of wanted to steal the tristero idea from Pynchon's Crying of Lot 49 (tl;dr underground mailing system linked with a symbol) and modify it for whatever would be most compelling. Would be interesting to see if anyone responded to the bait and went to the great ends of like making a facebook page or whatever normies do.

Arg happen on /x/ all the time, but it's either just a few people or one person pretending to be a bunch of people.
